Later that night, while our monthly 90s themed party was in full swing, Lucas talked to Aidan about movies and art in my booth near the stage. I was at the bar with Anna. "I did not know that your brother was a film student!" I said.

"Yes, music is not his only passion. He is a very creative guy. And he seems quite interested in Aidan's point of view! Maybe we should free the poor guy from this trap."

She laughed. I stared at them, trying to notice every expression on the vampire's face. He seemed honestly interested in the conversation. Anna looked at me and said: "It's the first time I see you interested in anyone. Must be a very special guy."

I smiled. "Well, you know I am definitely on the asexual and aromantic spectrum, as you would say now. Love, to feel this kind of connection, it happened a few times in my life. But I do not look for it or need it in any way to feel happy. But yes, some very rare times. This time, maybe."

"I wish you the best !"

"Thank you, you are sweet. But, you know, he is a vampire and I am an immortal: our lives are complicated. And he means trouble."

She rolled her eyes. "Come on, I know how he feels. Have you seen the way he looks at you? He is fascinated by you."

After several eurodance tunes that everyone in the room knew by heart, the DJ chose unexpectedly to launch a slow dance session with a song by Bruce Springsteen. Aidan came to me and, without a word, asked me to dance. I laughed.

"Please?" he insisted.

And I followed him. At first we kept our distance, but then we came closer. I could hear his heart beating and smell his hair. I felt like in the prom episode of a teen series. "Sad eyes never lie," the song said. Just as when we had met.

When the song ended, we stared at each other without a word, before going back to the bar. But my hand was still in his.

Anna had a giant smile on her face and Lucas, wanting to avoid at all costs any awkwardness, broke the silence: "This DJ is not so bad."

"But not as good as you," I replied.

With a shy smile, he took another sip of his beer. The conversation was going on, when the young man asked: "So do we know more about the vamps, or this James?"

Aidan's expression changed in an instant: "James?"

"Yes. They said that someone named James had told them about the Pearl. Why? Do you know him?"

Aidan sighed and looked at me. "James is the vampire you've met at my exhibition."

"Of course he is." I was annoyed again. "Do you realize that I have not had any problems with vampires for years, and the minute I meet you..."

"So what's his problem ? Who's this guy ?" Anna asked.

"He is my best friend," Aidan said with a sad and apologetic look in his eyes.

Anna and Lucas stared at me, in shock. I must say that I was not as surprised as they were.
