Episode 7

"Disco Angel", Man is doomed

After the incident at the Pearl, I had decided to turn the club into a sanctuary, with Sonia's magical help. I had never needed such a measure but I did not want to take any risks. Anna, who allegedly wanted to thank Aidan in person, had suggested, not without a not-so-hidden agenda, to invite him to test the spell. As far as Lucas was concerned, he had not said more than one or two sentences to me since Saturday night. He was upset and worried about what had happened but did not know how to address the topic.

Sonia and Anna traced lines of light at every corner of the club, chanting, in a murmur, words which I could not understand. Lucas chose this moment to finally express his anxiety.

"So this is her life now?" He said.

"Yes and no. There are some extra layers of complexity which come from a supernatural existence but Saturday night was special. It does not happen every day. It was the first time in a long time that I had this kind of problem. But we will be safe here now, with the spell." He stayed silent. "I know you are worried about her," I continued. "But she can handle this life. She is going to get stronger and stronger and she will learn more about the world she is living in. She is going to be fine, I promise."

He looked at me with sadness in his eyes. "But I can't accompany her on this path."

I put my hand on his arm to comfort him. "You can, Lucas, by trusting her. She adores you and she wants you to be a part of her life. She is different but she is still your sister. You do not have to be afraid. As a mortal, she could have died any day in a car accident, now she is confronted with new dangers, but she can also avoid old ones."

Lucas nodded, trying to convince himself.

"I am here for her and for you," I said. And he smiled. "Also, I wanted to ask you something : did you think about staying in Paris a little longer? I loved your set and I would be happy if you would be our resident DJ for a while."

He put his hand on his head, eyes wide opened. "Really? Yes. Yes! It would be great. Thank you. I don't know what to say. Thank you!"

In a sudden impulse, he hugged me and then moved back, embarrassed. I smiled. "You are welcome. That is a deal then. I am glad."

Aidan arrived just before the spell was over. All the walls glowed for one second: it was done.

"Hey! I wanted to thank you for your help," Anna said with a huge smile.

"You're very welcome. I'm glad to see you're ok."

"I am. And you're just in time to test this thing we've done with Sonia. She's an incredible witch. I'm trying to learn as much as I can from her."

"Yes, yes, I can do a thing or two," Sonia said from the other side of the room, waving her hands as usual. She took a cigarette from her sequin purse and asked Aidan if he had a light. He did not, therefore she grumbled something unintelligible and left, not without one or two more expressive hand moves.

"So," Aidan said, "what do I have to do?"

Anna explained to him that the sanctuary spell was supposed to prevent any supernatural violence, and that he just had to try to bite me to check if it was working. As simple as that.

"It seems dangerous," he said in a mocking tone.

Then he came closer to me, stared at me for a while, showed his teeth and leant towards me. I did not make a move. As I could feel his breath on my neck, he was suddenly thrown backwards in a blast.

"Are you ok?" I asked while he was getting back on his feet.

"Yes, I'm fine," he said with an awkward smile, rearranging his hair.

"Well, we can officially state that the spell is working. Congratulations." 

Anna smiled proudly, then said to Lucas : "Can you put some music on to celebrate?"

I poured four glasses of champagne and turned towards Aidan. "We are going to open the club very soon. Would you stay with us tonight?" I asked him.

"Of course," he answered.
