"Work B...ch", Britney Spears
2013, November 16th, The Pearl
"So tonight we will try something new, let's call it The Saturday Night Challenge. You can put the name of a song in this jar and at 2AM I will choose a paper, randomly, and I will have to sing the song. What do you think?"
Everyone cheered, especially Nicolas who sat at my booth and screamed louder than everybody else. He could be so quiet at times but so exuberant at others, particularly when he wanted to be supportive.
The Pearl had opened its doors a few months before and I had this idea of a special party on Saturday nights.
"I'm waiting for your song and then I'll go home," Nicolas said.
I laughed. "Thank you for being there. I know it is not your idea of a good evening and it was very nice of you to come."
"Well, yes. I prefer... quieter environments. But what you've done with the club is fantastic. I'm very proud of you."
"Awww, you are such a sweetie." I wrapped my arms around Nicolas and held him tight. "I am so glad to have you in my life."
He smiled. "Likewise."
We drank to this first edition of the "Saturday Night At The Pearl" party, and to our friendship.
At 2AM, I gave Nicolas the responsibility to choose a paper in the jar. "Suspense, suspense," I said. "So what will it be? Nicolas, darling, would you do me the honor?"
"The song is... 'Work Bitch', by Britney Spears. And the idea is from Genevieve." He smiled. "Well, I'm glad I stayed to see that."
I laughed. "Everyone, say thank you to Genevieve for this very nice choice of a song."
And everyone said: "Thank you, Genevieve."
"Alright, bring it on, bitches. Let's go!"
The least we can say is that this first Saturday Night Challenge was a success. The crowd danced and I ended the song standing on the bar.
"So what did you think?" I asked Nicolas.
"It was quite something." We laughed. "Okay, so now I'm out. Congratulations again. It's a great party."
"Thank you, honey!"
"Oh, and I think that this girl wants to talk to you," Nicolas said. I looked at the person he was pointing at. "She has been pacing the room for an hour now."
The young woman with light brown hair cut very short on one side and longer on the other, wore all sorts of jewelry. Eyeliner brought out her green eyes.
Nicolas left and I waved at the girl. "Hi. Can I help you with something?"I asked.
"I saw you are looking for a bartender?"
"Oh! Yes. Do you have any experience ?"
"I've worked as a waitress."
I liked the light in her eyes, with a mix of happiness and sadness which I found interesting. "Alright. Let's give it a try. Can you start now? Damien will show you the ropes."
"Really? Yes! Thank you very much."
"Hey, what is your name?"
"Anna."
