Lucas' Playlist: "Perfect Illusion", Lady Gaga
For the rest of the night though, nothing of the kind happened again. There were no more flashes.
We did not talk more about what I had seen with Aidan because it was not the place or the moment. I tried to reassure him, telling him that it was nothing and that I would figure it out later.
"I am fine," I told him. "You can come back home. I know that you want to work on your painting. Go. We will talk about this later."
He searched my eyes, with an expression of concern on his face, but he finally agreed.
When he left, I asked Ahmed for another cocktail.
"There's a problem with this guy," Anna interrupted, pointing her finger to a young man, tall and handsome, who had his hand on a woman's waist. She tried to push him away but he insisted.
I strode towards them. "Keep your hands off of her," I said.
He snarled, looking down at me. "Mind your own business."
"My club, my business. Leave her alone."
"Oh come on," he laughed. "This is not a big deal. She can't come here dressed like that if she doesn't want to be touched."
"Get out of my club. Now. This kind of crap is not welcomed here."
"You can't force me to leave."
"As a matter of fact, I can. For the last time, get out of my club, now, or I will call the police."
He stared at me and finally left. I told Patrick that the man had to be blacklisted at the entrance and checked on the girl, who thanked me.
I then took the mic on stage: "Your attention please, let me remind you that we will not tolerate any form of harassment at The Pearl. Here we treat everyone with respect. If you feel unsafe for any reason, you can come to me or to any member of the staff."
Everyone cheered and applauded. I continued: "That being said, you can enjoy the party! By the way, I can see it is almost 2 AM. Valentina, darling, can you choose a paper and tell me what my challenge is for tonight?"
The bartender shuffled and read the result on the one she chose: "'Perfect Illusion', by Lady Gaga. And it is from Sophie."
"Everybody, say 'Thank you, Sophie'." And everyone said: "Thank you, Sophie."
I grinned. "I got an idea: Valentina, do you want to take care of the drums? We could do an acoustic version. What do you think?"
"Yes!" She had the biggest smile on her face.
"Alright, then. Let's do that. Lucas, feel free to join us and add whatever you want."
I took an acoustic guitar and Valentina sat behind me. We looked at each other, she gave me the beat and I started to sing. During the chorus, Lucas joined our effort with textured electronic sounds which gave richness to the cover. And at some point, Valentina even sang as a backup. This version was all rough energy and I fed the music with all the stress from my earlier visions.
The cathartic effect of the trio with Valentina and Lucas lasted for a moment but it soon began to fade. I sat back at my booth to finish my cocktail when I saw James enter the club. There was something different in his eyes and on his face. I could smell trouble. This night was definitely not a good one.
