"Echo Home", The Kills
"Hi, Joe! Are you still at Tad's house?" I said.
"Yes, I'm planning to stay until probably the end of the month."
Joseph was on the patio at the front of the house. I could hear some cars and see the garden of the neighbor behind him on the screen of my phone. The branches of a beautiful elm tree were moving slowly with the wind. "How is he?" I said.
"Fine. Thanks to you! He still has some moments of confusion but they are not as violent as before. He meditates every day. And we even tried the mind-reading thing yesterday."
I smiled. "Did it work?"
"It was very faint for now. He saw an image as... a flash."
"It starts like that. Now he has to figure out how to control his abilities. It can take some time. But he is very lucky to have you. Your support is crucial."
Joe tilted his head. "When it happened to you, did you do that by yourself?"
"Well, yes, for a long time, I was by myself. So the reality of it is that I could not do it. It was a dark time in my life. But at some point, someone helped me. I was already far gone and it could have been too late but this person gave me the strength to fight and to crawl back out of the fear and confusion."
I heard Tadatsune saying "Is it Elise?" and then he appeared on the screen. Joseph waved at me to say goodbye, gave him the phone, and went back to the house.
"Hi, Tad! I am so glad to see you," I said.
"Same. Thank you again. I am not there yet but I can see that things can get better now."
"You are welcome. I am so happy for you. The world needs your sharp mind and your kindness. So hang on, alright?"
"I will." He came closer to the screen. "Is this the jintachi I gave you?"
I turned my head towards the wall of my living room and the display of swords behind me. "Oh yes, it is. It was in my house in Porto for a long time but I took it back here last year. I like to have it with me. It conveys so many memories."
Tadatsune smiled. "It is well surrounded. If I'm not mistaken, below it, is Amaury's sword."
"Indeed, it is! You remember! Again, so many memories on this wall."
"I would have loved to have the opportunity to meet him, you know. It is beautiful that you still use his name."
"This way he is still with me. I need those elements from the past to keep a grasp on the present."
"I understand what you mean better than ever."
After our conversation, Aidan sat beside me and asked: "Who was Amaury?"
"He was my best friend. We got married, because it was convenient for both of us. It was in 1346. As you know, the world was very different then." I smiled.
"Which one was his sword?"
I showed him the one with a red and golden pommel. "Amaury Chaceney", he said.
"De Chaceney. I dropped the aristocratic particle."
He grinned. "Of course you did." And after a pause, he continued: "He must have been a special person."
"He was. He was incredibly brave and always surprising. He had a unique mind and" I laughed, "a stubbornness which had no equal."
"How did he die?"
"He disappeared. He was probably murdered or he had an accident. I could never find what happened to him."
"I'm sorry. I would have loved to know him," he said. And he wrapped his arm around my shoulders, while we were both still staring at the swords on the wall.
