"I wanted to talk about this with you at some point when we would have known one another better. Yet here we are," I said. I stared at them for a second and smiled. "So yes, I am immortal. But you do not have to be afraid of me." They stood silent, with their eyes wide. "I know it is a lot to deal with. I can answer your questions if you have any."

"You're immortal?" Valentina said. "What does that mean? Can you regenerate? Can you grow old?"

"I can regenerate, as you have just seen, but not from everything. There are a few things that can kill me. However, not many, especially now. And no, I cannot grow old any longer. I still have the appearance I had when I became immortal."

"And when was that?"

"Well, do you want to sit down?"

"No, I'm fine," Valentina said, sitting down.

"As you wish. It was in the first century BC."

The young woman stood up. "You're two thousand years old? Girl, you look good."

I laughed. "Thank you."

"But were you... born this way? How did you become immortal?" Ahmed asked.

"We do not really know why someone becomes immortal or not. Sometimes, when someone dies, generally not from a natural death, this person wakes up again as an immortal. There are very few examples of people dying of a disease or old age becoming immortals but it has happened. And that is all we know. We cannot predict it."

"So you're not alone?"

I looked at Anna and she nodded. "She's not," she said. "We are not many but we are a small community."

Both Ahmed and Valentina sat down.

"And how old are you?" Valentina asked Anna.

She shrugged. "I'm young. I became immortal two years ago."

"Cool, cool, cool, cool," Valentina said in disbelief.

"You have to understand that you cannot talk about that with anyone else," I added.

They both nodded in silence.

Anna and I then explained to them that there were many things they did not know about in this world and we talked a little bit about magic and, indeed, vampires. Their eyes were wide open but they did not seem afraid. "Are you alright?" I said.

"So is it the apocalypse or something?" Valentina asked.

"No, honey, we have been cohabiting since the beginning of time. This is not something new. You do not have to be afraid."

"Well, then I think all this is... awesome. I was already happy just to have found a job to pay my rent. But this... this is unbelievable. This is epic. I love it."

Valentina hugged me and I smiled.

"And you, Ahmed, how do you feel?" I asked.

"I want to know more. You must have so many stories to tell. It's crazy."

"Great. So I had already wished you a warm welcome to The Pearl but I can now say: Welcome to our world!"
