"Melody? Melody. Wake up!"
I opened my eyes and sat up. I'd fallen asleep while coloring the poster.
I covered my yawn. "What time is it?"
"12:14," Joshua replied.
"Still half an hour till lunch," I groaned.
"Do you want me to take over the coloring?" Tristan asked.
I nodded. "Yes please- I'm falling asleep over here."
Jen had been sick since yesterday, so I'd spent all my time working on the project and talking with Tristan and Joshua- and I'd found out that the two were actually pretty funny and nice.
I took Tristan's seat and began helping Joshua hot glue the popsicle sticks together to create the bridge.
"Don't we have the whole rest of the week to do this?" I questioned.
"Yeah, but this way we can just finish it and get it over with," Joshua replied.
I shrugged. "Better than doing math, I guess. I don't get the point of it anyways. Like, it's not like we're ever going to use quadratic functions in-"
I let out a high-pitched yelp as I drew my hand back. I hadn't been focusing on what I was doing and a glob of hot glue the size of an eraser dripped from the stick onto my hand.
And not just any hot glue. Gorilla hot glue.
"Are you alright?"
I stared at the blob that was beginning to solidify. My hand trembling, I looked up at the boys.
Tristan called our teacher over, who sent me to the nurse's office.
"The n-nurse's office?" I asked. "I-I don't know w-where that is."
"I'll take her," Joshua volunteered.
He got a pass signed and led me out of the classroom by the shoulder.
"You okay? Does it hurt a lot?"
I nodded without looking up at him, not wanting him to see the tears welling in my eyes.
We entered the nurse's office, and I spotted a cranky looking old lady.
"Yes?"
"I-I... um-" I showed her my hand.
The nurse sighed. "Oh dear. Come here, let's see how bad it is."
Joshua cleared his throat. "I'll be back in the-"
"No, don't leave me. I don't know the way back," I pleaded, finally looking into his amber eyes, my own filled with tears so stupidly over hot glue.
He probably thought I looked so pathetic and weak, but Joshua's gaze softened as he sat down in a chair by the doorway.
---
In only 10 minutes, the chunk of hot glue had been peeled off the back of my hand, as well as five layers of my skin. Admittedly, it did hurt quite a bit.
Joshua and I began walking back to class after I had a bandage wrapped around my hand.
"Sorry, about your hand... I should have been looking where I was gluing," he apologized.
I shook my head. "It was my fault. I wasn't paying attention anyways."
"Took you two a while," Tristan said as we reached the classroom. "Your hand alright?"
I nodded. "It hurts, but I'll be fine."
When the bell finally rang for lunch, I gladly grabbed my lunchbox as we left for the cafeteria.
Since Maddie and Jen were both absent, I was the only girl at our table of four boys.
"...then Max gave the cue and everyone started- hey Melody!" Oliver stopped and waved mid-sentence, noticing me.
I sighed and waved back, shooing at Reese so I could sit in between him and Evan.
"Whoa, what happened to your hand?" Evan asked.
I groaned, wincing as he traced a finger over the bandage. "Hot glued my hand."
Jake stared at me dumbfoundedly. "You did what?"
"You heard me. It's no biggie, I only got rid of a dozen layers of skin," I replied with an eye roll.
"Damn. You're so clumsy."
"I can testify to that," Reese chuckled.
