September 2021
One Saturday, we were all hanging at Callie's. Of course, me being me, I fell asleep because I hadn't gotten much sleep the night before.
When I woke up around 30 minutes later, the room was empty- with the exception of Connor, who was on his phone.
"Finally up, Sleeping Beauty?"
I rolled my eyes at the nickname. "Where are the others?"
"Downstairs probably getting a whole truckload of snacks." He opened his mouth to say something else but stopped and looked away.
I raised an eyebrow. "What is it?"
Connor shook his head. "Nothing important."
I scooted over and sat down in front him on the soft carpet floor. "You do realize that I'm not going to leave you alone until you tell me, right?"
"It's just... Ian doesn't know about the rumors about us yet."
"Yeah, and?"
"And I just..." Connor groaned. "Well this girl, Stacey Baker, at school..."
"Yeah, I know Stacey- what about her?"
"Well, she... asked me if I'd go to the September Dance with her."
"Oh." I didn't know why I felt a pang of jealousy. "What'd you say?"
"I declined. But I got a text while you were asleep- I don't even know how she got my number- and apparently she's friends with this girl named Macy, and Stacey said she'd tell Macy to tell Ian that you and I were dating if I didn't go to the dance with her."
It took a second for my thoughts to process.
"Why are all the people here so toxic?" I finally breathed.
I picked up my phone. Then I sighed, remembering that I'd blocked Macy and deleted her number from my phone when we were in 6th grade, when our hatred for each other began. I spotted Ian's phone on Callie's desk and picked it up. I read a message on the screen and gasped, almost dropping it. Connor came up behind me and began to read the message aloud.
"Hey Ian! I've been hearing from all around school that Melody's using Connor to cheat on you... have you heard? Just thought you should know... anyways what are you doing next week? Maybe we could-"
I slammed Ian's phone down back down onto the desk. I couldn't stand to hear anymore.
"We need to come clear with Ian and tell him we're not dating." I started towards the door.
"What if we were?"
I stopped. "What?"
Connor stepped closer to me, making me back up until I hit the wall next to the doorway. My phone fell to the floor with small thud as I felt my face grow red.
"What if we were dating?"
Trying not to get lost in his eyes, I looked away, mumbling, "W-what are you talking about?"
He tilted my chin up so I would look at him again. "Whether you feel more for Ian than me or not, I know I'm more than a friend to you."
Maybe he was, but I wasn't going to let him know.
I grabbed Connor's wrist, where his hand was still on my chin. He was a good 6 inches taller than me, and since I wasn't wearing heels or platforms as usual, he seemed even taller, which was kind of intimidating.
