August 4th, 2021- the first day of school

I got up early at 6:30 am, even though school started at 8:10.

After taking a shower and drying my hair, I quickly grabbed the outfit I'd planned out the day before.

I threw on my sweatshirt, almost forgetting to add my favorite necklace, along with a few rings

I threw on my sweatshirt, almost forgetting to add my favorite necklace, along with a few rings. Just for a cute touch, I added a small ribbon bow to my half-up hair. Aiming for a clean, natural makeup look, I added some mascara and lip gloss with the smallest amount of blush.

I checked my reflection to make sure everything was perfect multiple times, then headed downstairs for breakfast.

---

"Hey, sunshine."

I shut my locker to see Connor. I could tell he was grinning, even through his mask.

"Will you stop calling me that?" I grumbled.

He pretended to think, bringing a hand to his chin. "Hmm, let me think about that... no."

I pouted.

"Don't look at me like that," he whined.

I laughed at his cuteness.

We headed to 1st period together, which was Language Arts.

Unfortunately, we had assigned seats. I sat next to May, who I knew from the previous year, and Connor sat two tables away from me.

"Welcome to a new school year!" Mrs. Cohen chirped excitedly. She was a young teacher, probably in her early 30's. "I'm Mrs. Cohen. Some of you may know each other, and some may not, so for our first activity of the school year, we'll be doing some introducing games! First off, we'll go around and say our first name, then something we like that begins with the same letter."

Oh great.

"Then, the next person will say the ones before them, and their own as well. I'll start- I'm Mrs. Cohen, and I like cookies!" She then motioned to Lina, a girl who was in my class last year, to go next.

"Oh.. um, Mrs. Cohen likes cookies, and I'm Lina and I like... leopards."

The boy next to her, Sam, went next. "Mrs. Cohen likes cookies, Lina likes leopards, and I'm Sam, and I like steak." It went on until my turn came. "I'm Melody, and I like music," I said after reciting the list.

After the last person, Nate, who said that he liked his nanna, we moved on to the next game.

We were given papers with boxes that said different things like "someone who went camping this summer" or "someone who has two siblings." We were supposed to get someone to sign a box that applied to them.

I went to my friends, May and Amelia, who looked like they were absolutely despising the awkward situation.

I laughed, "Come on, guys, at least we can do the ones for each other." After we'd scribbled down our names on each other's papers, I looked at the cluster of boys, who seemed to be doing well and not showing any sign of awkwardness.
