Chapter 15 - Bookworms

Chwe Vernon. Why does that name sound so familiar?

All I can think about aside from why that name sounded so familiar was that she wanted to have a "fresh start" with me when Joy claimed that she had a boyfriend.

I completely space out and without thinking, like usual, I run out towards my dorm with no explanation to the two staring at me from afar. I needed to think and separate myself from all the drama that had happened or was about to happen so I went into the library and luckily no one was there. Not only was I there to think, but I also went just to see what good books I could read since I was always a bookworm. I look through the shelves and pull out a book to read the summary. I notice that someone is trying to grab a book that is on the higher shelf and I reach out to grab it for them.

"Oh, thank you! I'm so embarrassed I can't reach that book, but um, thanks for helping me." the girl says while smiling down at the book.

"No problem. If you need any help trying to get another book, I'll be happy to help anytime." I reply.

"Thanks." the girl says, looking up at me.

Irene! What is she doing here this early!? I think.

"Um, I should go, bye! Thanks again!" Irene says in a hurry after a rush of crimson ran across her face.

And just like that, she runs off to the table area where there were numerous circular white, grainy looking tables with a glossy light brown wood like outline. I don't think much of it and notice that I can't see anything from the book from where I am standing so I go near a bright window on the side and stand near it and start reading the book. I'm looking through the book and notice that the book I had in hand was the sequel to another one. I look up and wonder if I should read the first one or just continue reading the sequel and I realize that Irene is staring in my direction, peeking through the top of her book and as soon as she sees me staring back at her, she turns her eyes toward her book again and pretends to keep reading. I almost burst out laughing and went to the shelves of books to see if the first book was still there and notice it was checked out. I sigh and make my way over to the window again to just try to understand the book. I guess Irene can tell that I was frustrated so she talked to me again.

"Hey, uh, do you need some help? Kind of looks like you don't really understand anything of that book and I'm guessing you've never read the first one?" she stands up, pushes her chair in, and starts slowly walking towards me.

"Um, sure. But I already checked and the first book is checked out, so I doubt you can help in any way." I say.

"Did you check the carts? It's the start of the year so they don't always have all of the books on the shelves yet." she says, walking towards me.

"No." I reply.

"How didn't you check the carts yet?!" she says, laughing now. "Come on, I'll show you to the carts. Since you clearly don't know where they are."

She brings me over to the cart and there it was, the first book to the series sitting patiently there.

"I guess you're right. The book was on the carts. Thanks." I say.

"Anytime, I guess. We might be dragged in a mess right now and we don't exactly know each other that well, but I would help anyone else out as long as they're pretty nice." she replies, shrugging.

"Well, what do you think about I treat you to a cup of bubble tea as a thank you?" I ask, kind of wanting to know her better right now.

"Well, why not? But, you have to find a way to end all the dating news. You might be enjoying all of this, but you do know this affects others' lives right? I mean, I'm the outcast, and you're the popular one; I don't want to be dragged into your ranking, and you probably don't want to lose that ranking." she negotiates.

"Sure. I'll try my best. But no guarantees, okay?" I say.

"Fine." she replies.

"And even if this does all end, you're going to have to do me a big favor as a thank you." I say.

"Okay, but nothing big." she says.

"No promises." I smirk.
