***There is another chapter after this one with all the pictures I wanted to use and didn't get to. I wanted to do two one-shots as well but I honestly don't remember so I can't promise anything***
"You're late," the red-eyed girl said as soon as she noticed the familiar presence of her best friend standing somewhere behind her.
She hadn't even bothered to avert her gaze from the drifting clouds, too focused on the extravagant forms they had and the kunai she was spinning from time to time. Sakuto jumped down from the tree he had just landed on and rubbed the back of his head with a sheepish smile.
"Sorry, my parents kept pestering me," he said, laying down on the field of grass next to her. But unlike her, instead of putting both hands behind his head, he laid them on top of his stomach. He looked at the sky as well and let go of a sigh "I wonder if the day when they stop prying on our lives will come"
"Probably not," Mirai said. Sakuto turned his gaze towards his right, towards her, when he felt her slightly calloused fingers on his arm. They had slipped under his short-sleeved jonin shirt and were now tracing his Anbu tattoo.
"I swear to God if you're going to mock me again I—" Sakuto began, fearing to hear some of her usual teasings. Ever since he dropped the Anbu a year ago, when he was 16, Mirai always found a way to mock him for lasting so little in the Anbu. After all, when he joined he was very annoying about it.
He had one of his worst fights with (Y/n) because she thought he wasn't fit for being an Anbu, especially not at 14. And Sakuto just thought she was being overprotective again, but in reality, neither of his parents nor Mirai thought he was suited for being an Anbu. Still, he made it in; but much to his dismay, everyone ended up being right. And knowing how much Sakuto disliked to be on the wrong Mirai took it to her advantage to tease him about it.
Mirai chuckled but surprised Sakuto when she leaned on him and laid a quick peck on his masked cheek before she laid back in her place and continued to stare at the blue sky.
"Hey," Sakuto complained "It's not fair. I wasn't ready" Mirai giggled silently again but ignored him.
"Are you excited about tonight's festival?" she asked him instead.
"Not really. Can I have another one now, please?" he said, making Mirai's smile widen.
"You're such a killjoy" she ignored him yet again "It'll be fun. I heard there will be a lot of fun and cute stands, fireworks, and even a dance"
"Cool," Sakuto said, obviously being sarcastic "Now..."
Mirai finally looked at him, her smile being more subtle but only because she was repressing it, unsuccessfully trying to look at him seriously.
"First fix that attitude. It's a summer festival! It'll be fun, c'mon, you're just acting all emo again" she said, and he rolled his eyes.
"Okay, it might be alright. At least there'll be takoyaki" he said, this time unironically.
She smiled when he admitted it and laid her hand on his masked cheek, hooking his finger and middle finger on it and pulling it down. Mirai stared at Sakuto's unmasked face that only her apart from his parents had seen, and then she laid her lips on his. He quickly answered by resting his hand on the back of her head to keep her from separating. They only did once they both needed air. Sakuto let her go and she went back to her resting position.
"I get why you wear your mask, but why does your father do it?" Mirai asked, fixing her gaze on the clouds again.
"What do you mean why I wear it?" Sakuto asked back again, his eyes still on her.
