TRIGGER WARNING!!!! There is strong mentions of self harm/self harming and sexuality discussion in this chapter so if that bothers you feel free to skip this chapter. (Just to clarify there is nothing wrong with finding out your sexuality but some people had bad experiences with coming out so that's why I put it with a trigger warning) The underlined part is the main source of topic, but other mentions happen throughout the story.
Fresh starts. Thanks to the calendar, they happen every year. Just set your watch to January. Our reward for surviving the holiday season is a new year. Bringing on the great tradition of New Year's resolutions. Put your past behind you and start over. It's hard to resist the chance of a new beginning. A chance to put the problems of last year to bed.
New Year's Eve was when I decided to really have a fresh start. By doing this, I bought my own little studio apartment close to the hospital. Living with Meredith, George, Izzie, and a dog was a lot to handle and I needed my own space. It was about time I moved out on my own. Sure, was I impulsively drinking while buying this apartment? Yes. But will I regret it? I hope not. I make a coffee in my OWN kitchen with some peace and quiet, finally. I don't have to wait twenty minutes to use the bathroom to brush my teeth or shower either. I finish my cup of coffee and drive to the hospital all by myself.
I walk into the hospital and Richard is standing on the staircase. I stand next to Alex and then Meredith comes walking over to us. Richard is about to give us a speech. "Listen up people. New Year, new rules. Or should I say New Year and we will be enforcing the rules mandated by the residency review committee. There were too many mistakes made last year. Fatigue played too big of a role. Exceeding 80 hours a week will not be tolerated. Sullivan, you were on-call for 28 hours, leave when you hit 30. Grey you were here at 2AM last night, see you at noon," Richard orders.
"I get to go? Free time?" Meredith asks, surprised by the news.
"Run before he changes his mind," I tell her. She runs off.
"Oh and people, our nurses are going to have to work extra hours to compensate so please treat them well. Cranky nurses don't do us any good around here," Richard tells us.
When Izzie and George walk past Alex and I, Izzie says to Alex, "Well maybe you could cheer them up." George and Izzie both laugh and Alex and I give them dirty looks. Izze stops walking and turns around to face us again. "You know what? My New Year's resolution was to let it go, and I am. I have... let it go. I apologize," Izzie admits. The four of us start walking down the hallway together.
"You do?" I ask her. Alex smirks at me.
"I do. How'd you test go?" she asks Alex.
"I feel pretty good about it but I won't know for sure for a few days," he tells us.
"Well we're all pulling for you," Izzie says with a smile on her face.
"We are?" George asks, confused on why Izzie is forgiving him.
"We are," Izzie says.
Bailey, Alex, Izzie, and I are now doing rounds. We enter Denny Duquette's room. He's here looking for a heart transplant. The nurse starts to fix his IV as we walk in.
"Denny Duquette," Bailey greets him.
"Hey Dr. Bailey," Denny says in return, smiling at her.
"I hope seeing you here finally means you found a heart," Bailey says to him.
"No offense doctor but I'm not a big fan of hospitals. It takes something pretty special to get me in here," he admits.
"What do we know about Mr. Duquette?" Bailey asks Izzie.
