Holly? Can you hear me?
I wake with a jolt and see that I am in the med hut. I look around but I am all alone, if no one is here, where did that voice come from? I slowly get out of the bed, aware of the throbbing pain in my head and walk over to the door. I stop when I look through a crack in the door and see Alby quietly talking to someone outside.
"Where did she come from?" I recognise the voice but can't quite make out who Alby is talking to.
"Minho and Thomas said that they found her unconscious in the maze. Where she was found, the boys saw something carved into the wall above her. It said 'She knows more than you think, the girls are the key'"
"What on earth does that mean?"
"I have no idea. She's still unconscious but she's locked up in the slammer with Clint in case she wakes up."
"How are we going to tell Holly? It's not like she isn't going to notice"
"I'm not sure, I think we should just let her see the girl for herself. If you'll excuse me, I have to go and check on Holly, I promised Gally I'd keep an eye on her while he's gone." Gally's gone? Is he okay? I creep back to bed so that Alby doesn't know that I overheard his conversation. As soon as I close my eyes, I hear the door creep open. I pretend to just be waking up and give Alby a weak smile. He pulls a chair over and sits next to my bed. I sit up and look at him.
"Hey Holly, how are you feeling?" He asks softly.
"I'm okay I think, my head still hurts but apart from that I'm okay. Where is everyone?"
"Most of the gladers are having breakfast. I think some of the Keepers are having a meeting right now."
"What about the other Keepers? Where are they?" I ask worriedly.
"You mean Gally?" I nod, "Well, Gally, Minho, Thomas and a couple of others have headed into the maze to look at where they found the girl." Her name is Olivia but why do you not know that, why do I know that?
"But Gally isn't a runner, why is he allowed in the maze. It's not safe." I start to panic. Alby puts his hand on my arm.
"He'll be okay, they all have spears and Minho told the boys exactly what to do and expect if anything goes wrong." My breathing starts to slow down.
"I still don't like it, when are they coming back? Where's Ol- the girl?" A hint of confusion flashes in Alby's eyes but goes away as quickly as it arrived. "I want to talk to her."
"They should be back just after lunch. The girl is in the slammer unconscious right now but you're welcome to go over there once Jeff gives you the all clear. I'll go and get him for you."
"Thanks." I watch as Alby walks out of the med hut.
Are you coming to see me?
Who is talking to me? It's a girl's voice but I don't recognise it. I close my eyes tightly and try and reply to the voice in my head. It amplifies my headache but I don't care. I just want to know who is talking to me and how they are in my mind.
Who are you? I wait a couple of seconds but I don't hear anything back. I start to think that it didn't work but my doubt goes away when a voice pops in my head with a reply.
You don't remember me?
No, I don't. Who are you? Are you Olivia?
Well done Holly, I knew you would work it out. Come to me, we need to chat, I'm about to wake up.
I start to reply but I'm interrupted when Jeff walks in. He asks me some questions and checks my temperature before giving me the all clear. I rush out of the med hut and almost run to the slammer. I look in at the girl lying on the floor. I can't see much of her as she is lying with her back towards me. She has long brown hair that looks almost identical to mine but that's all I can make out.
"Hello?" I whisper.
"Hey Holly." I jump at the voice but calm down when I see Clint walking over from the back wall of the slammer. "Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you."
"No, it's okay. Do you mind if I wait out here until she wakes up?"
"No, not at all. She hasn't woken up at all. We're starting to think she might ever wake up. As you're here now I'm going to go to the toilet and get some proper sleep." He unlocks the slammer from the inside and starts to walk away but turns around to say something. "Hey, Holly?"
"Yeah?"
"Umm, remember to take deep breaths and stay calm." What a weird thing to say.
"What? Why?"
"You'll see when she wakes up." I make a confused face at him, but he keeps walking away.
He's right you know, you might get a shock.
Just wake up so I can talk to you properly, all this mind stuff is giving me an awful headache.
Your wish is my command.
I look over at Olivia and she that she is starting to stir. I stand up quickly and shout out to the glade.
"She's waking up! Quick! She's waking up!" The gladers stop what they are doing and rush over in my direction. I turn my attention back to Olivia and when she turns to face me, I get the biggest shock of my life.
