"Hey Alby, you alright?" I walk next to Alby and follow him towards the homestead.
"I'm okay Gally but I need to chat to you about Holly."
"Oh, what about her?" I hope he hasn't found out about me kissing her yesterday, Holly won't want that information out until she's chatted to Thomas and I don't want all the boys to hate me for 'stealing' her away from Thomas.
"I just think that as she is the only girl, we need to set some ground rules to keep her safe." My fear drops and my shoulders relax.
"I think that is a great idea Alby. I was actually just thinking about getting the rest of the builders to build her her own hut to give her some privacy, so she doesn't need to change in the bathroom."
"Yes, that was one of the things I was going to ask you to do. Could you also build her her own shower? We can put a note down in the next supply box asking for pipes and stuff you need to build them and do the plumbing."
"We should be able to do that with the right supplies it might take a while though, until then I could put a door and lock on one of the showers in the homestead for her. What do you think?" Alby nods as he walks into his office/ bedroom. He gestures towards a chair and I sit down on it and face him.
"Another thing we need to do is write the new rules to protect her. We don't know why she is the only girl, but she must be here for a reason and we need to keep her alive and safe. I think the biggest and most important rule should be that under no circumstances should she become a runner." My heart drops at the idea of Holly facing the dangers of the maze so agree with Alby without a second thought. I watch as Alby opens his rule book and writes down the first of many new rules.
"My second idea is that she should never be left alone for too long and definitely can't go deep into the woods by herself. It's too dangerous." This rule seems a bit farfetched, but I agree with it none the less. After a while of talking, Alby seems happy with all the rules that we have come up with and decides to call a meeting tomorrow to let everyone know about the new rules.
"Is that everything?" I ask, standing up from my seat.
"Not quite Gally," I sit back down and look at Alby's slightly scary expression, "I heard a bit of commotion last night and heard that you were in the medjack's hut and I would like to know what happened."
I sit there for a few seconds wondering how much I can tell Alby without getting a couple of nights in the slammer, I realise though that Alby will find out the full story somehow and will be angrier if he learns that I lied to him.
"Well Alby, I was walking around the glade looking for Holly when I spotted her going into the clearing that Chuck likes to carve in. I followed her in and chatted with her and we ended up kissing. However, unknown to us, Thomas was lurking behind some trees and when Holly left, he ambushed me and punched me square in the nose which is why I had to go see Jeff." I look up to see Alby looking disappointed in what he's just learnt. He leans forwards and asks me the question that I don't want to answer.
"Did you fight back?" I look down sheepishly.
"Yes sir. But I only gave him a small kick in the stomach, nothing as bad as what he did to me."
"Alright Gally, I appreciate your honesty but since you did harm another glader you will spend the rest of today and tonight in the slammer."
"But I didn't really hurt him that-" Alby slams his hand on the table which shuts me up. He sighs and rubs his temple.
"I don't particularly care how much you hurt him; I'm only interested in the fact that you did harm him even though you were just fighting back. You'll be happy to know that I will also punish Thomas and it will be harsher as he could've seriously injured you. I think two nights in the slammer with no food will suffice, wouldn't you agree Gally?" I would rather that he was banished but agree with Alby. "You may leave for the slammer now." I stand up, shake his hand and head to the slammer where Newt locks me in and walks off.
"Newt!" I shout after him, "Will you tell Holly where I am, I'd like to have a chat with her."
"Yeah, I'll do that now."
"Thanks Newt. I owe you." He laughs.
"I'll hold you to that mate." I swear I see him wink at me. Oh god, I'm not looking forward to when that favour is cashed in. I look around the slammer and see that it's not really changed from the last time I was in here apart from some new carvings and a wooden stool. I reminisce about my first month in the glade when I was even more of an angry, irritable little shank who spent most of his time locked in the slammer. I laugh at the memories; I like to think that I'm not that angry anymore but I'm still a very closed off person. I try to not get attached to any of the gladers ever since I lost my best friend Jack in a griever attack and his death broke me. I didn't talk or eat for days and eventually, Alby stepped in and basically force-fed me to keep me alive. But I can't help but get attached to Holly. She's amazing, she makes me laugh and I am totally 100⁒ myself around her. She makes me a better person and I love being around her. The way her hair flies in the wind, the way gold specks glimmer in her eyes when the sun hits them, the way she smells of roses- My trail of thoughts are cut off when I see Holly crouch down at the bars of the slammer.
"Hey Gals, what happened? Why did Alby send you here?" She sounds worried and reaches her hand through the bars, I quickly take her hand before she changes her mind and pulls it away. I'm surprised at the jolt of electricity that comes from her touch and it seems like Holly is too. We look into each other's eyes, starstruck, for a minute before laughing and putting the surprise behind us.
"Thomas saw us yesterday, in the clearing. After you left, he came after me and punched me. I was just going to leave him, but he got me all riled up, so I kicked him and now Alby is punishing me by putting me in here." I look up at Holly to see an angered expression, however, I don't think that the anger is directed at me.
"This is all my fault, I shouldn't have kissed you." Tears start to well up in her eyes. My heart and face drop at her words but I continue listening, "No Gally I didn't mean like that, I liked kissing you, I just shouldn't have done it before talking to Thomas. That wasn't fair to him. But he shouldn't have hit you for my own mistake." I squeeze her hand and she looks down at me.
"Listen to me Bambi, none of this was your fault. Thomas made his own decision; you didn't force him. And if anyone is to blame, it's me. I initiated the kiss even though I knew you were still with Thomas, that was my own fault, not yours. I really like you Hols and I don't want you to blame yourself for something that is mainly my fault, that wouldn't be right." She sniffles, wipes her tears away and smiles softly at me.
"I wish you weren't trapped behind those bars because I really want to kiss you right now."
"You'll have to save that for another time," I say happily to her, "now off you go, you have lunch to make." She stands up and starts to walk away.
"I'll get Chuck to sneak you some food tonight, so you don't go to bed hungry. I'll be here first thing tomorrow to let you out alright?"
"Okay Holly I'd love that. See you tomorrow!"
"Bye Gals."
"Bye Bambi"
