Alex's POV

Do you ever have one thought that constantly occupies your mind? Like you can't go more than two minutes without thinking about it. Even when you're not thinking about it, there's a pit in your stomach, or a looming feeling, like a reminder that you should be thinking about it.

That's how I was with Calum. I've thought of nothing else but him, and what happened.

I was thinking about him day and night.

Candice and I were cooking dinner, and I was thinking about him. I chopped tomatoes as Candice cooked onions for a soup.

We worked in silence until Candice decided to speak.

"So any progress on you and Calum?" Candice asked me, stirring the onions she was sauteing. I solemnly shook my head.

It had been a week since I apologized to Calum in his room. After he so abruptly asked me to leave, I wasn't exactly sure if we had ended on good terms or not. There were countless times where I wanted to go over and see him, but something stopped me every time.

"I don't know," I admitted. "I went over and apologized and he said he wasn't mad anymore, but he still seemed like he was mad, you know? Not to mention he hasn't called or texted me all week."

Candice gave me a sympathetic glance. However, I was positive she thought my high school drama to be absolutely ridiculous. "I'm sure you two will work it out," she reassured me.

"I hope so."

We continued to prepare dinner in silence. Our mom had told us to prepare an especially nice dinner, apparently we were having company over, though I had no idea who it could possibly be. Considering how sociable my family is, we hardly ever have people over for dinner.

Candice seemed to read my mind. "So who do you think is coming over?"

"A long lost cousin maybe?" I guessed, shrugging my shoulders. I continued to chop the tomatoes, getting lazier with each one. The tomatoes were for the salad, so they needed to look nice, but I had completely stopped caring.

The sound of the front door was heard, causing both Candice and I to look up from what we were doing, and see who had come through the door. I chopped the last slice of tomato while I craned my neck to see who it was.

A sharp pain suddenly shot through my finger, causing me to cry out in pain. "Jesus Christ!" I squealed, looking down at my finger to see blood beginning to seep out. My carelessness while cutting had resulted in me cutting myself.

"Are you okay?" Candice asked.

"Yeah, I'm fine," I grabbed onto my finger, squeezing it to help ease the pain. Unfortunately, when I squeezed it, blood began coming out at a faster rate, a few drops falling to the ground. Quickly, I made my way to the sink and turned on the faucet, running my injured finger under the warm water. It stung a little bit, but it was a nice sort of pain.

Footsteps and faint voices were heard walking through the hallway to the kitchen. I didn't turn around, I kept my focus on cleaning my cut.

"Alex, honey are you okay?"

I turned around to see my mother standing there, wearing a beautiful yet casual blue dress. Next to her was a man I had never seen before, he had dark brown hair and what looked like hazel eyes, though I couldn't tell from across the room.

"I'm fine," I reassured her. "But there may be some blood in the tomatoes."

"It's a good thing I bought extra," Candice said, pulling out the tomatoes.
