I wake up hearing commotions around me. Nabungaran ko si Mama Claire, isang katulong na karga-karga si JJ at isang di-pamilyar na dalaga. Nakahinga ako ng maluwag nang ma-realize na buhay pa ako.
"Tita, she's awake." Mahinang tawag ng dalaga kay Mama Claire. She attended to me after calling for the doctor.
I tried to talk pero walang gaanong lumabas na tinig sa lalamunan ko. Namamalat ako at nanghihina pa. "Jj..." bulong ko. I reached for him. Akala ko talaga mamamatay na ako kanina. Napakagat-labi ako. Thinking of what will happen to him if ever I die breaks my heart into pieces.
"Stay put, hija. The doctor is on his way." Hindi niya hinayaang kargahin ko si JJ. She asked me to rest for a while.
"What happened po?"
"You were rushed here from the restaurant. Altair called me- where is he anyway?" singit niyang tanong sa kasamang dalaga.
"Nasa labas, Tita. May kausap po sa phone." The lady informed.
"Call him. Tell him Jem is awake." Utos nito sa katulong before taking Jj in her arms.
"How's my patient?" Tanong ng doktor na may kasunod na nurse. The nurse checks my vitals and so on. While the doctor asked me a lot of questions about how I felt.
"Are you aware that you're allergic to peanuts?"
I nodded. Napahinto ako when I realized that the food I ate must have a peanut ingredient. Mukha naman kasing hindi kapuna-puna yong peanut sa pagkain. It must have been ground. How could I forget? The last time I had this allergic reaction was 8 years ago when I got tempted to eat a sandwich offered by a classmate unaware that it has peanut butter on it. At hindi ko na pinagtuunan ng pansin dahil abala ang isip ko sa ibang bagay kanina.
The doctor assured me that I'm out of danger now. He even reminds me to be more careful about my food intake. Agad din akong na-discharge kahit ayaw pa sana ni Mama Claire. I'm feeling better so there's no need to take some rest. I refused to take the wheelchair. Hindi naman ako invalid.
Kararating lang din ni Papa nang matapos kausapin ni Altair si Doc Rimas tungkol sa lagay ko. His eyes didn't left mine kahit attentive siyang nakikinig sa doktor kanina.
Naunang lumabas ng hospital suite sina Mama Claire kasama ang dalagang nagpakilala bilang Hannah na pinsan pala ni Altair at ang katulong na naalala ko sa pangalang Melissa. They brought their own car. Nabungaran ko naman si Altair na naghihintay sa akin sa labas ng comfort room. I walk passed through him pero napahinto nang marinig siyang nagsalita habang nakasandal sa dingding.
"What?" Pag-uulit ko. Hindi dahil mahina ang boses niya kundi dahil sa lakas ng pagdagundong ng tibok ng puso ko.
"The doctor said you knew you are allergic to peanuts. Since when?"
"Since I was a kid. I wasn't aware that there's a peanut in the food your ordered." I answered after clearing my thought.
