kalynn waves at me from across the room, beckoning me to come over. i tug on weston's sleeve and he looks at me, a little dazed. "come on, i found kalynn."

he perks up a bit more. "where?"

i stick my neck out, gesturing in their general direction. "she's talking to isaac."

the way i say isaac lingers in the air, suggesting something deeper. weston picks up on the cue with a gasp. "oh my god let's go."

bolting across the living room and squeezing through the crowd is awkward, and i vaguely notice kalynn laughing at me. isaac is a lot taller than she is, i notice, and i have to look up to meet his gaze.

"hi guys, you know isaac," she holds her hand out towards him, acting like we weren't talking to him ten minutes ago. her voice is clear and projects outwards, i can tell she hasn't been drinking.

weston leans his elbow on my shoulder casually. "met him once or twice, yeah."

kalynn's eyes glance down at his movement, and i stare at her, pretending like everything is normal. she shakes her head so subtly i barely catch it, and turns to isaac.

"your sister is really cool," isaac says, and i expect him to continue talking but he just halts there.

"the coolest," i agree. "well, she's not my sister but that doesn't make her any less cool!"

"what are you guys drinking?" kalynn asks. of course she knew we were acting off.

weston clears his throat and wipes a finger to his nose out of nervous habit. "...sprite."

"yeah, right," she grabs our cups out of our hands and sniffs the inside. "vodka?"

"oh come on, how'd you know?" weston asks, grabbing for his drink back.

she rolls her eyes and shoves the cups into our hands. "can you please just be responsible?"

"we are!" i object, taking a larger sip than i mean to in front of her.

"you know, i was going to ask if you wanted a drink but i don't think that's the smartest idea right now," isaac interjects, attempting to break some of the tension.

i laugh sloppily. "kalynn just try a sip of mine, it's good!"

she takes my drink reluctantly and tries a small sip. "is there even vodka in this? it doesn't taste like it."

"well you gotta drink more than that," i tell her, and weston begins cracking up, causing me to crack up too, like a domino effect.

kalynn listens and tries a bit more. i wait for her reaction.

"weston, go make me one."

"woohoo!" i cheer, and weston lifts his elbow off of me to go get kalynn a drink. i knew she'd give in at some point.

we stand in silence for a few moments, and suddenly i blurt, "so, isaac, do you have a girlfriend?"

"sav i swear to god," she says through gritted teeth, slapping at my wrist.

isaac laughs half-heartedly. "nope."

i raise my eyebrows and beam and kalynn, who's face is turning a bright shade of pink. "see?"

she stares back at me. "thanks for the help."

"no problem," i reply, not catching her sarcasm. i pat her shoulder blade with a little too much force and point down at my cup. "this drink'll take some of the edge off. don't worry 'bout it."
