"do you guys just wanna go to the beach tomorrow?" kalynn asks, opening the door to a sub shop a few blocks down from our rental.
"yeah," i say, taking the door handle to let weston walk in front of me. "i'm kinda tired still, so we can just spend the day there tomorrow. there's plenty to do at home for today."
after we unpacked the groceries, i showered the chlorine off and took another nap. i'm not sure what kalynn and weston did in the time that i was asleep, but afterwards we decided to go out to lunch at a nearby sandwich place.
"we could go to the boardwalk tonight," weston suggests as we approach the counter.
"ooh, that's a good idea," kalynn says.
"you know, i'm killer at skee ball," i chime in.
weston scoffs. "we'll see about that."
the man at the counter asks us what we want, and we all order our sandwiches before sitting down at a four chair table by the window. kalynn sits to my right while weston sits down across from me.
"since we're on the topic of boardwalk games, i am amazing at that balloon pop game," kalynn brags, and weston makes a face.
"i don't remember you ever being good at that game."
kalynn jerks her neck back. "i was! well, i still am actually. oh and the ring toss game!"
weston shakes his head. "dad would always have to win that one for you!"
"what? no! he would..."
i begin to zone out, retracting myself from the sibling banter. my eyes wander around the little shop, and i begin to people-watch. i notice a group of boys around our age barrel through the entrance noisily, and weston and kalynn's conversation comes to a halt.
we all watch them order their food loudly, and one of them spots us staring. "yo, you ever seen them around here before?" he whispers to his friend while slapping his arm. his whisper is still loud enough to carry over to us.
"nah, they..." i can't hear the rest of the sentence because he turns back towards the counter.
i take my eyes off of them and stare at weston across the table. the boys look so much bigger and muscular compared to him, and it almost makes me laugh. i can see he knows that i'm making the comparison and presses his mouth into a firm line.
kalynn taps my shoulder with the back of her hand with a large grin. "you should get one of their numbers."
i almost choke on my own spit when she says that. it's hard to remember that she doesn't know about weston and i.
speaking of weston, when i glance over at him he looks like a deer caught in headlights.
i grimace at kalynn. "no thanks."
"why not?" she asks. "the one on the end is kind of cute."
i barely even bother looking at who she's talking about. "they aren't really my type."
she shrugs. "alright then."
weston stares straight down at the table, and it looks like he's trying to hide a red face. is he angry, embarrassed, or jealous? it's hard to tell.
within a second, the crowd of five or so guys begins walking over to our table. "shit," i groan, and kalynn mouths this is your chance!
i shake my head and turn the other way to face the window, wanting to avoid any eye contact. of course, i feel a knock at the opposite end of the table.
"uh, excuse me?"
i'm forced to look at them now, and the guy has curly brown hair with brown hooded eyes. "hi," i greet as nicely as i can.
"hey," he smiles, and a few of them laugh awkwardly. "so, we thought you both were really pretty, so do you think we could we get either of your numbers?" he gestures to a taller blonde standing next to him.
kalynn presses her mouth together. "i'm sorry, i'm kind of already in a thing with someone..."
of course she uses isaac as an excuse, i have nothing.
his smile drops a little bit. "nah, it's cool. what about you, though?"
weston tenses across from me, gnawing at his lip. i feel frozen, but i have to make up something.
kalynn interjects before i can even respond, "i think it would be a good idea for you guys to exchange numbers. what are your names?"
"i'm ethan," the brown haired one says.
"cole," says the blonde.
she smiles, "i'm kalynn, this is savannah."
"nice to meet you both," ethan says, and i feel like crying as i resist the urge to kick kalynn underneath the table. "so, savannah?"
i wave my hand sideways, trying to form words. "i'm flattered, but i'm just not really interested in a relationship right now."
as soon as the words leave my mouth, i mentally curse at myself. weston's head cocks to the side, and i want to explain to him that it was just an excuse, not an actual thought.
"i mean we can just be friends," ethan suggests. "not even your snapchat?"
i inhale sharply through my nose and bite the inside of my cheek. "no, sorry."
loud oohs and laughs erupt from the guys behind them, and he rolls his eyes. "it's alright, i'll see you around."
kalynn waves goodbye while i ignore a farewell altogether. god what even was that?
"why did you do that?" kalynn asks me as i bury my face in my palms.
i lift my head and stare at her blankly. "i told you it was because they weren't my type."
she groans. "still, it could've been the start of something!"
"it's already over so i don't see the point of this conversation," i snap. her eyes go wide and she sinks down into her chair, defeated.
we sit there in silence for a minute, and i'm confused. i've never really fought with kalynn ever, but this little dispute has really gotten on my nerves. it's not her fault she doesn't know weston and i are a thing, but i also had a good excuse as to why i didn't want to talk to that guy, yet she still disrespected my boundaries.
"i'm sorry," kalynn starts. her mouth is still open, indicating she still has more to say but can't find the words yet. "i just was excited that you could potentially find someone so we could talk about boys together. it felt one sided when i was talking to you about isaac, so i just thought it would be fun if you had someone too. i didn't mean to make you upset."
"i know you didn't. i just wanted you to respect my reasoning, but it's fine. i'm sorry i snapped at you," i say. it's better to just push past the problem since i know she doesn't have any idea what it's actually about, and i can't tell her.
she smiles sadly. "you had every right to snap at me."
i shrug, and she pulls me into a sudden hug. i hug her back, and weston begins clapping.
"that was beautiful," he comments, wiping a fake tear from the corner of his eye. although he's trying to be humorous, i can hear a hint of shakiness behind his voice.
our sandwiches are called from the counter, and kalynn volunteers to go up and retrieve them. weston reaches across the table and takes my hand, rubbing a few circles around the face before kalynn comes back. i really need to talk to him later.
we eat and have casual conversation, weston and kalynn diving back into their boardwalk game banter. we leave soon after, and kalynn walks a few feet in front of me and weston. he kisses me on the cheek and the lips a few times while her back is turned, and i smile each time he does so.
how did i get so lucky?
