TW: Use of homophobic slur and violence
***I thought school would be worse than it was.
In my head, I guessed it would be similar to a dramatic scene from a movie: everyone would point at me and laugh before beating me up. Yeah, I guess my mind was also dramatic.
But it wasn't like that. I could see people staring at me, they weren't discrete at all. They also whispered while clearly looking at me, and unfortunately I heard some homophobic therms. I would be lying if I said there weren't any girls who came up to me and asked me to be their 'gay best friend'. I didn't get those girls. I was a human, not a pet.
In any case, there were people who smiled at me while I was passing by, like a way of saying they got my back. Plus, my friends wouldn't let me alone. The only ones I wasn't seeing there were Brayden and, obviously, Jack.
"Won't she stop staring at me?" Jonathan muttered awkwardly, trying to avoid eye contact with Melisa, who kept glaring at our table in the cafeteria.
"Grimace at her" Jimmy suggested before twisting his nose and sticking his tongue out of his mouth.
"Very mature suggestion, Jimmy" Kaden said.
"Thank you" Jimmy smiled; thinking Kaden's complement was genuine.
"Or... We could just ignore her" Will reasoned. He looked at Melisa's table; his usual kind eyes turning into annoyed ones "Or I could throw my sandwich at her"
"Hey! Don't waste food" Francis stepped in "If you don't want it, I'll take it" He grabbed the sandwich from Will's hand, taking a bite before our friend could even react.
"I was going to eat that!" Will snatched his food from Francis's hands.
"Let's just ignore Melisa for a moment" Andrew intervened "We have an important game tonight. You're all ready, right?"
"Yep" I confirmed "Relax, Andrew, we're gonna win this thing"
"We better" Jimmy said "I made a bet"
"With who?" Will frowned.
"With my dad!" He said "He thinks we're gonna lose, so I bet twenty dollars we wouldn't"
"You have a supportive dad" Jonathan ironized.
"Not really" Once again, Jimmy couldn't understand sarcasm.
"Oh no" I heard Will's distant voice.
"What?" I asked.
"Look who's here" He pointed with his head at Melisa's furious figure approaching us.
"This is gonna be embarrassing" Jimmy muttered.
By my side, Kaden closed his hand in a fist. I kicked his leg under the table so he'd stop feeling such an anger. There wasn't anything Melisa could say that would make me feel bad. I knew myself. And I knew who I was wasn't wrong. This and the fact that she meant nothing to me gave me the strength I needed to deal with this type of situation.
"Hello, Jonathan, how are you?" She stood at the head of our table; her nostrils were dilated and her lips formed a pout.
