April

I woke up in a white room, and a familiar scent of medicine hit me. I was totally confused for a moment before everything came screaming back to me. All of my thoughts. My hands automatically went to clutch my head as if doing that was going to stop them.

"April!"

I glanced up at my dad. He shuffled forward from his seat and touched my forehead.

"Sweetheart, how are you feeling now?" He gently asked.

"Fine I guess." I mumbled. Nothing was fine. Not anymore.

Then I noticed that no one was here except my dad. Where was Christian?

"Dad, where is Christian?" His face fell as soon as words left my mouth.

"He's not here." He quietly said.

My heart began to beat faster again. Did, did something happen to him?

"Is he okay? What happened?" I pleaded.

"Don't worry honey he's fine. But," he patted my hand. "Doctors have advised him not to see you for a while."

What the hell?

"What? Why? It doesn't make any sense!" I threw the sheets away. I had to see him.

"Wait." Dad's hands held my shoulders. "I'll explain."

After he had made sure I was tucked in again, he sighed. "Doctors said that you had a panic attack."

Well, tell me something I don't know.

"They said you might have one again if you saw him. It's because you're feeling extremely guilty right now, aren't you honey?"

"How did the doctors know that? Did you tell them everything?" I was shocked. I didn't know this mafia history thing was something that was okay to be made public.

"No. I just made something up along the same lines." He shrugged. "They've got the idea of what you are feeling."

Did doctors really believe him or did he bribe them? I'll never know.

"But I live with him currently we're going to meet sooner or later." I resisted.

"Actually, we've shifted all of your stuff back to our house." Dad replied looking rather guilty. He should be. He had returned in my life few hours ago and already started taking decisions on my behalf.

"But-"

"It was his decision April. I didn't suggest it. Also, he has moved out of his house, and There is a reason why he is distancing himself from you." He spoke like he understood us where he didn't know anything about us.

"What is that reason?" I demanded.

"He has protected you and me from his own family. Our family has killed the most important person from that family and still he has chosen to protect us. What do you think is going to happen now?" His eyes were dead serious, and his tone was low.

I let out a shaky breath. It was all our family's fault to begin with. Maybe it was for is to stay apart. A mafia war was about to begin. Uncle George won't be staying quiet for long time. I'm more surprised that he hasn't done anything yet.

"Where is my phone? I need to talk to him at the least."

Dad nodded at me and handed me my phone which was lying in his pockets.

He picked up quickly which was unexpected and his voice sent shivers throughout my body.

"Hazel?"

***

Christian.

"Hazel? Are you okay?" I asked but no answer came.

"Hazel you're scaring me!"

"Sorry." Her voice finally came and I felt my body relaxing as I leaned back on the chair in my balcony.

"Christian I need to, " there was a pause. I wondered what she was thinking about.

"I heard about it from Dad. You know about us not seeing each other." I tried not to let it bother me. The sinking feeling in my gut that had been there since I realized I might actually trigger a panic attack.

That I might actually hurt her.

"I know. First of all, Hazel you don't have to feel guilty about what happened to my mother. Please stop torturing yourself with that it's not your fault." I tried not let my voice shake and let her know how much it bothered me.

"I promise I won't think about it anymore so can I... Can I just see you? I need to see you, Chris!" My eyes shut close almost immediately. But that didn't help at all. I couldn't stop the wave of longing wash all over me. Only I knew how much it hurt when I just left her not even waiting for her to wake up in the hospital.

"Hazel I want to see you too but this isn't only about your panic attack anymore." I got up from the chair and started pacing around in the long veranda.

"I know it's not only about that. Christian why did you go against your family for me and my dad?" Did I really have to answer to that?

"Because I care too much about you. I couldn't let your dad die before you could meet him." I sighed.

"Why do you care about me?" She continued to press. I knew what she wanted to hear.

"I don't know that." My throat had dried. It was getting harder to swallow.

"Chris, you can't just leave." She quietly said.

"Hazel I'm not going anywhere. It's just for sometime." I hoped my words assured her.

"Really? Then why did you move out? Why all of my stuff is back in my house? Why aren't you going to live in that house anymore?" Her voice had risen and I heard a soft sob escaping her lips. I couldn't. I couldn't bear imagining her crying face.

"That's just to protect you. My family is going to come after me. I can't get you involved in it. It's going to be dangerous. I can't see you suffer I-"

"And what about you?" She was now crying without stopping her voice from shaking and cracking up. She had a break down. What the hell am I doing?

"Hazel I'm.." I didn't know what to say.

"Christian if something happens to you.." she spoke, through her sobs. "You're not going to see me anymore."

"What? What the hell are you talking about? Hazel, don't even think about doing anything to yourself!" I gasped for air. Her words haunted me, and I struggled to think straight.

"Hazel, don't please I-"

"Do you realize now? How do I feel when you do reckless things? I had felt that several times. Do you understand how it feels like to even think that your life is in danger?" She was quiet again. Her sobs had ceased.

"I'm sorry." I stared at the sky above. All I saw was her face. Her beautiful face.

"But I have to either face my family or run for the rest of my life. They're not going to let this slip. I had helped an enemy. For them your family is a huge one."

"But-"

"Just listen to me baby please."

"Okay."

"I promise nothing will happen to me. I'll make sure of that, and I'll come to you as soon as it's over. Can you wait for me till then?"

I heard her sigh. "Fine. But this is the last time okay?"

"Okay. You take care of yourself too okay? Stop thinking about unnecessary stuff."

"Fine. take care Chris. See you."

I cut the call tossing the phone in my pocket.

"Sir, the boss has called." Richard was at the door of my room.

I quietly walked down the huge staircase this house had and picked up the old-fashioned phone receiver. "Yes?"

"Christian, come at the main house right this moment. We need to talk." My dad said smoothly, hiding the venom from his voice.

"Sure I will be there soon dad."

Richard was staring incredulously at me when I put down the receiver. This was one of the houses McDermott family owned in Old Lyme. Apparently my grandfather used to live here so he had all of these old-fashioned stuff everywhere around the house. You would probably feel like you've entered into the past the moment you stepped in.

"What's wrong Richard?" I raised a brow at him noticing he had his mouth open.

"Sir are you seriously going to see him, right now?!"

"Yeah."

"But-"

"Richard, Carlos McDermott is a devil, scheming man. He knew where I was and still chose not to attack here. Instead, he has called me to his place. The main house." I started walking towards the stairs.

"What does that mean sir?"

"It means he doesn't want to do anything to me, but he has some deal in his mind." I clicked opened the door to my room.

"From the moment I had met Christopher back then when I was escaping, I knew something was going to change." I turned back to Richard.

"Go tell everyone about it, and I want Sam and Ryan in the car with me. I'll be down in a minute." I instructed.

"Yes sir." He briefly bowed and disappeared.

I glanced at my gun as I refilled its ammo. Let's see what you've got to say, father.
