April.
"Which one do you like?" Leah holds in her hand two completely different types of dresses. One being pure dark and way too short for my liking and one being cream coloured and so long as if it was a wedding dress. We were trying to decide a dress for upcoming Christmas party.
"Pick whichever you want." I showed the least interest I could in the damn dress and turned my attention back to my phone. Nothing. There was no message or call from him yet. Our Christmas holidays were about to end. It's been several days since the last time I had a talk with him.
"Are you done thinking about him?" Leah snapped her fingers across my face.
"Leah, I'm worried." I muttered knowing how much she despised him.
"You know what? You need to put your mind to something else. Why don't we call Jayson?" She exclaimed pulling out her phone. As if he was going to be a distraction.
"I don't think that's going to help." I sighed getting up from the comforts of my bean bag where I'd been lying all afternoon. I was back in my house now living with my dad. It's been a ride of awkward moments and strange feelings as he'd never been around before but I loved the feeling of having him around. We sometimes talked about mom, and he would tell me stories of how they met and all. It was sweet.
"Hey baby." I heard Leah as I left the room. Thinking about Jayson would make things more complicated anyways.
The doorbell rang as I stepped into the kitchen. It Must be Dad. I thought to myself as I skipped towards the door.
"Welcome back!" I greeted him cheerfully.
Stood before me was the younger version of him.
"Hey." He whispered utterly surprised at how happily he was welcomed by his sister. I was at loss for words for a minute I just blankly stared back at him.
"What do you want?" I asked. My heart sank a bit noticing how thinner he had gotten in just two months.
"I heard about Dad... Is he home?" His clear green eyes tried to have a look inside the house.
"He's gone out. You can come in, though." I unwillingly shrugged opening the door for him."It's your house too."
I went back in followed by him.
"How's your loving cousin?" Words just flowed out of my mouth harshly than ever. As if I could ever forget how my own brother had betrayed me siding with that fake doll.
His eyes widened for a moment, and he cleared his throat. "she's...good."
I didn't pry more especially on that mysterious pause. I could easily get more information out of him, but I wasn't desperate to know more about the girl who tried to kill me.
"How are you?" He hesitantly said after a long five minutes of silence. I put down the water glass I was holding. "I'm good. I didn't really know that you cared."
"I know you're mad at me. But I'm your big brother. I would never stop caring about you." He softly said.
I said nothing to him and left him alone in the living room. My mind couldn't get away from the fact that he didn't look good and no matter what happened between us my heart deeply cared about him.
"I can't wait for it!" Leah was still screaming into her phone as I sauntered in dropping back on the bean bag.
"Fine. I'll see you tomorrow then babes." She blew him a kiss he couldn't see and cut the call.
"He's going to be here tomorrow! We're going to be together on Christmas!!" She thrilled with excitement and threw herself above me crashing my bones."Oh my God!" I yelped.
"I must shave my legs!" She clutched her purse from behind me. "I'm sorry I have to go now Ap! See you at the party tomorrow and please try to pick a good dress!" She kissed me on the cheek and before I could blink she was gone. I troubled to process how fast she was able to move in just a few seconds. I got that meeting Jayson after so long must be thrilling for her. I gulped hard thinking about Jayson and his kiss along with his complicated feelings. I felt so nauseous that I had to go down to drink water again.
When I came downstairs, I found Austin exactly where I'd left him. Standing by the couch.
"Why don't you sit down?" I asked taking the water bottle out of the fridge again. He was standing in his own house like some stranger.
"April, I don't have time. When do you think Dad's going be back?" He was chewing the sides of his lips as he talked. A habit he had when he grew extremely impatient.
"I don't know." I replied honestly. Dad didn't tell me where he was going either.
"Can you give him a message? It's from Uncle George." He looked expectantly at me.
My hand stopped in the mid-air and mouth hung lower. "Why are you delivering his message? Are you one of his men or something?" I thrusted the bottle back into the fridge.
"I've been living with him for a while now." He shamelessly admitted. Had he lost all of his senses?
"Austin, are you crazy?" I screeched at him. How could he? How could he go and live with that sick bastard? He had always treated us like his servants!
"Wait a minute... Is it... Is it because of Gracie? Because that poor cousin of ours couldn't stay here? Because I didn't treat her well? That's the reason, isn't it?" My hands were shaking with anger boiling in my head.
"April, I know about Gracie. I know she tried to...kill you." He clenched his fists.
"What?" I was confused beyond my own understanding.
"Whatever I'm doing Ap, trust me, is only for your well-being. I can't see you hurt. I can't let anything happen to you." He put one of his hand on my head and gently gave it a jerk."I must go now."
"But I don't understand." I mumbled.
"Tell Dad to come to the house Uncle is currently living in. It's near the outskirts of this town. Here's the address."He Handed me a small chit. "Tell him it's urgent. It's about the McDermott's recent fight."
About the time those words sunk into my brain and I glanced up for an answer he was gone. McDermott's fight? What does he mean by that?
I tried to hold my shaking hands together and rubbed them on my pants. Pulling out my phone, I dialled his number without a second thought. I'd been doing this repeatedly for many days but I never got any answer. No one picked up. Not him. Not his men. No one.
My breathing was uneven to the level I could feel my chest tightening. Something had happened. Something must have happened to him.
Several minutes passed but no one picked up this time as well. I ran upstairs and locked myself in my room. Tears blurred my vision as I slowly walked towards the bed. Something bad had happened to Christian and I had no way to know. Last Christmas was mom's accident and this year... Christmas was like bad omen to me now.
I let my body fall on the soft material. For a long time I was Clutching the bedsheets tightly in my hands. Tears and a dried up throat accompanied me as I slowly fell asleep.
