April

Shaken. Shocked. Sad.

My heart felt all of the above mentioned feelings altogether at once when Austin spilled out the truth he was hiding safely in his heart for God knows why. He could not tell me any valid reason why he was being such a sneaky jerk keeping all the information just to himself oh and sharing it with the worst person ever. Gracie. He shared it with Gracie before he told me about it two months ago.

Two months.

That's not a really long period but when the entire truth about the past incidents which deeply affected you come to light one by one it feels like it's been an eternity because honestly I still can't fucking believe it.

Christian McKinney the guy I cared about and unknowingly loved was the one driving that truck which took away my dear people from me.

He was the sole reason behind all the miseries I faced including the sorrow and loneliness which haunted me every day.

My brain is still processing the fact but it's not really accepting the truth.

May be it's not the truth.

I can't really trust my brother anymore and it's highly possible that he's trying to frame Christian into this as he hates him so much. So I must find out on my own what actually happened that night. Who was really driving that truck. In my heart I can only pray that the person was not Christian.

"That'll be four dollars and twenty five cents. Would you like anything else mam?" The guy at the reception of McDonald's asked in a sweet voice to which I responded with a shake of my head. "No thank you." I added before turning around and following behind Leah who was searching for a good spot.

"Ah how about there?" She suddenly stopped making the food in my hand wobble a little as the plate hit her back.

"Wherever you want Lee let's just sit and eat please I'm damn hungry!" As I whined in a pathetic tone of my voice my eyes flickered over a shadow who passed us. I did try to look at it again but the shadow just disappeared somewhere when I was expecting it to be at the counter. A shadow of a person who was wearing a black hoodie. My stomach twisted at the thought and decide to let it go for now.

"This is actually good." Leah talked while eating her chicken burger and I couldn't help but make a face. "Don't talk while you eat princess." I said, giving her a disgusted look.

I thought about the steps I had decided to take to find the truth behind the fact my brother told me. It was dangerous and I was totally aware of it. There was only one thing that was bothering me since the moment I decided to do this.

To determine whether Christian was the one behind that accident or not I had to become his enemy.

Christian

Stranger. She was a stranger to me now. At least that's what I was telling myself continuously. I didn't know her but my eyes still roamed around her again and again. Why? Because you can't trick yourself. It's easy to fool the world but when it comes to your own mind and heart you can't run away. You can't turn away from the reality in front of you.

"Christian." My father patted on my shoulder.

"Hi dad." I said without turning back to face him. No matter how nice he has been to me these past two months didn't mean I was getting happy seeing him every morning.

"Did your men got any clue yet?" He asked what he has been asking me regularly and it sounds rehearsed. It's been two months since I woke up in a blank white room of the hospital screaming her name. Hazel. I didn't know what was coming for me. What stood in front of me was too hard for me to break. It stood right in between me and her making it impossible to even look at her again with same emotions. It was a truth hidden deep in my past but somehow it connected to her. Her family.

"Not yet. I saw her yesterday though." I let that slightly slip through while my father was busy skimming through the newspaper. I wanted to handle it my way but as long as this case was handled by him it wasn't possible. It was just him ordering me around just like he ordered his men around. It was frustrating but at least it would lead me to that person who murdered my mother.

Sometimes you don't actually have to be a bad person. Just by marrying someone as bad as my father you probably just become one.You also have to face the consequences of the actions of your other half. I would never say better half.

My mother was that someone. She was a kind soul who fell in love with the devil.

"Her? You mean that Hazel girl whose actual name is something else." He asked folding the newspaper.

"Right."

"We need to investigate her Christian. I have only met her once but she reminds me of him so much that I believe she's from the Grey family." I gulped hard as he kept the newspaper away and started pacing the room.

It is her. Hazel is the person my father is searching for because her real name is April Grey and she's the daughter of the person who murdered my mother. I just wish it's not the truth though. Even the slightest possibility of her being his daughter burns my heart.

"But dad we're not sure that it was someone from that family yet right? I think you should stop jumping to conclusions." Christopher entered the room casually. "Oh I didn't know you were here too." He growled at me the moment his eyes landed on me.

"I don't need your opinion Christopher. Just because your so called friend Austin belongs to that family doesn't mean that they're innocent. That family is much more dark than we know. They kill their own people. Why would they think twice before attacking someone else?" My father said stating the truth.

As long as I knew Grey family was the most creepiest and cruelest one among the gamblers. They were secretive and dark. No one dared to mess with them just because the matter always got much complicated.

"Also your friend didn't really talk about his family did he?" I got up rubbing my hands on my jeans. "Both of us knew Austin for a long time in Amsterdam. He was the most secretive guy I've met. Why don't you use that tiny brain of yours and try to remember brother?" I snapped. Christopher always made me angry but these days it seemed like his brain was loosing cells making him unable to think.

My father had a suspicion only on one man. Jonathan Grey. According to him this Jonathan guy was most probably the one who killed my mother because he held some sort of grudge against the McDermotts. However neither my father nor anyone else in this family knew where this guy came from and where he is now.

Then there was the Grey family.

Father tried to investigate them by sending spies in that family many times but each time the results were same. There was no sign of Jonathan Grey in that family. No one talked about him. There were no records about anyone named Jonathan. He didn't exist in that family.

So that was the only hope I had. That Hazel was not really related to him. If she was..

I wouldn't be able to stop myself from seeing her as my enemy.
