"Re! Re, you're back!" Remus barely had time to register his older brother running towards him before he was tackled in a hug. "Praise Allah, you're alive."

"Not for long. You're kinda squeezing me to death here, Ro." Roman let him go and Remus gasped out a breath. Roman took hold of his shoulders and looked at Remus.

"Where did you go? Why did you leave?" Roman asked and there was hurt in his voice. Remus plucked Roman's hands off his shoulders.

"I went out." Remus said, unfastening his cloak. "Into Agrabah. I wanted to leave, Ro." Before Roman could ask something, Remus cut in. "Not because of you. I'm just not needed here, that's all."

"You're needed." Roman said. Remus rolled his eyes.

"Please, Ro. You can't even convince yourself of that." Remus shrugged.

"I heard you'd gotten in trouble with a thief. Are you okay? They didn't hurt you, did they?" Roman asked, moving on quickly from the obviously taboo subject.

Remus shook his head. "No. I'm fine, really Ro. But d'you know who sent the palace guards?"

Roman shrugged. "Think it was Patton but-" Remus turned on his heel and started marching down the corridor. "Hey, Re! Re, wait up!"

"Patton!" Remus yelled. The advisor stood up quickly.

"Your highness," Patton said smoothly, "so nice to have you back safe. We were all very worried."

"Don't pull that bullshit with me." Remus snapped. "I know you're only still here because of my brother."

Patton sighed and fell back out of his straightened, I-am-talking-to-authority posture. "Fine, what d'you want?"

"Why did you send those guards after me? Were they tailing me?" Remus asked. Patton started to smirk but wiped it off his face quickly.

"Just a precaution, your Highness."

"For who? Me or Agrabah?"

Patton shrugged. "What does it matter? What matters is that your back here, safe." His worried, almost sly expression fell. "And you'll stay here, understood?"

Remus crossed his arms. "Why were those guards tailing me? What did you do with Deceit?"

Patton looked at Remus, his eyes wide. "Deceit? I don't recall, who's that? Oh!" He laughed. "Oh, you mean Janus." Patton's expression fell. "I'm afraid we apprehended him, your Highness." He swept past Remus, the edge of his cape whispering across Remus' feet. "And he won't be coming back any time soon."

Remus took an involuntary step back. "You didn't." He said. He shook his head. "You murdered him?"

"Murdered is such a strong word." Patton said, silhouetted in the doorway. "And it was a necessary precaution. He was a dangerous criminal. Oh, oh, but you cared for him, didn't you?"

Remus looked up at Patton in surprise, his mouth open and his hurt displayed across his face. Patton looked down at his feet regretfully. "I wish you would've come back sooner. Perhaps you could've saved him then. Oh well, no point crying over spilled blood."

Remus' pain contorted into anger and hate. "You are a cruel creature, Patton." Patton held Remus' gaze, a ghost of a grin passing over his face.

"I'm aware, your Highness." Patton said. Remus looked down as the hate in his face clouded his eyes with tears. He didn't look at Patton as he stormed past him and up to his room.

Janus pulled himself up and onto the marble balcony. Sneaking past the guards had been difficult but he'd managed it.

"Damn." He said quietly. "These castle folks really are fancy."

"Who's there?" Janus jumped off the balcony railing and leaned against it.

"Just me. Janus." He said.

"Unless you're a ghost, you can't be here." Remus said. Hints of sobs broke his words.

"I'm very much alive, your Highness." Janus said. "Do I need to prove that to you?" There was no reply. "You've been fed lies, haven't you?" He asked. "Believe me, I know the feeling. But I assure you, I'm not a ghost, I'm not a mirage, I got away safe enough and now I'm sticking my neck out to see you so could you please come and see me too?"

It really did sound like Janus. And Patton had hated Remus for years... Remus poked his head out of the door to see Janus leaning against his balcony, looking up at the stars.

"Remus is fine." He said, making Janus jump. Janus looked at him and smiled.

"Very well. Remus." His smile dropped slightly. "Those lies really hit you hard, huh? You've been crying." Remus shrugged, not trying to deny it. "Anything I can do to help?"

Remus crossed his arms across his chest. "Just be here and be real." He smiled at Janus. Janus smiled back.

"Well, I'm real enough." He half-shrugged. Remus walked over to Janus and leaned his hands on the balcony rail, looking up at the stars.

"This really is a far cry from my home." Janus said quietly. "Must be nice..." He trailed off, looking up at the towering marble and bronze that made up the palace.

"Looking for what you can steal next?" Remus asked. Janus laughed once and looked down at his feet.

"Actually I'm here to retrieve something of my own. Something you took from me." He looked at Remus through his hair and didn't elaborate. Instead, he hesitantly put his hand over Remus', giving Remus plenty of time to pull his hand away. Instead, Remus intwined his and Janus' fingers.

"And what exactly did I steal from you, Janus?" Remus asked, looking Janus in the eye. Janus didn't notice they were leaning closer to each other until he could feel Remus' breath on his face.

"My heart." He said quietly before closing the gap between him and Remus. The kiss wasn't something out of a fairy-tale. There were no flashes of magic or magical transformations. It was just simply a kiss. A sweet, gentle, beautiful kiss between a thief and a prince.

Remus broke the kiss but didn't pull too far away. He brought Janus' hand to his lips and kissed his knuckles gently.

"You stole my heart first," he said quietly, "so I guess we're even."

Janus laughed lowly, a light blush dusting across his cheeks. "Yeah, guess we are."

This is cute. I kinda like this... but also kinda don't. Don't know know why.
