Remus blinked against the sunlight, squinting up at the guards on the parapets. He could hear Janus' breath - ragged from running - beside him and his own heartbeat was pounding in his ears. Janus' bag was pressed against his leg and one of Janus' hands was on his shoulder. Remus was trying not to think about the contact too much.
"Well?" Janus hissed, still somewhat out of breath. "S'it clear?"
Remus shushed him quietly. "Can't see a damn thing." He whispered. "Little help?"
Janus sighed and his hand left Remus' shoulder. He could've done something or he couldn't have, Remus wasn't sure. But a cloud crossed the sun at the perfect opportunity.
Three guards. One at each post. Nothing too bad.
"Well?" Janus asked again, falling back against Remus. He was so close Remus could feel some lose hairs from Janus' plait tickle the back of his neck.
"Three guards." Remus reported. "Shouldn't be too difficult to take out but you're going to have to be quick."
"No way am I running again." Janus hissed.
"You'll have to." Remus said. "If you want this to go to plan."
"Couldn't you get me over there?" Janus asked. Remus shook his head, still decidedly not looking at Janus. Because he knew exactly what Janus would do. He'd blink those beautiful blue eyes of his and Remus' resolve would trickle down to nothing.
"I don't have enough energy to get you to the castle, distract the guards and get us out of here." He hissed. "So you're gonna have to run."
Janus blew out a breath. "Son of a bitch, fine." He hissed. "Just go and gimme the signal already."
"Fine, Mr Bossy." Remus said, nudging him playfully.
"You love it." Janus whispered and Goddammit, Remus shouldn't feel so attracted to just simply his voice.
"Shut up." Remus mumbled. He closed his eyes and focused on the spot directly behind the guards on the parapet. The world seemed to lift away and he felt the ground beneath his feet change.
He opened his eyes and smirked. Perfect, right behind the guards.
Grabbing a pellet from his belt, Remus aimed his slingshot at the first guard. He whistled to get the attention of the first guard.
Before the first guard had even fully turned around, Remus fired the pellet. It broke against their face, scattering red over their skin. Their eyelids fluttered and they crumpled.
"Shit, didn't know it worked that fast." Remus said. He looked at the other guards. "They'll be fine."
The guards drew their swords and Remus backed away.
"But I won't be." He said. His back hit the wall behind him. A smirk made its way onto his face as a (very bad) idea made its way into his head.
Remus jumped onto the wall, grabbing another pellet from his belt. He fired and another guard crumpled.
"Put your hands where I can see them." The third guard said. Remus laughed and leaned backwards, toppling over the side of the wall.
"Now, now, now!" He yelled. He saw Janus start off in a sprint across the courtyard before closing his eyes.
The world changed around him again and when he opened his eyes again he was on a watch tower. He grinned and cupped his hands around his mouth.
"Hey, bastard!" He yelled. The guard turned and Remus fired another pellet. Gone.
