Into The Woods

Remus looked behind him as he heard a branch snap. He shouldn't be conspicuous in the trees, should he? He waited. Nothing happened.

Remus let out a little breath that puffed in the air like smoke before carrying on his careful clamber from tree to tree. He was going to be late.

Remus grinned as he swung down from the tree, landing on his feet. He dusted down his trousers and straightened his shirt as he waited. He looked up at the stars winking through the tree branches and grinned.

"Such a beautiful night." He thought. "To meet a beautiful person." Remus'd better remember that. To use later.

A breath of cold air on the back of Remus' neck sent shivers down his spine and made him laugh.

"Jan." Remus said, still giggling. Janus wrapped his arms around Remus' waist and leaned his head on Remus' shoulder.

"Hello, princess." Janus said quietly. "Miss me?"

Remus wriggled around in Janus' arms so he was facing his boyfriend. "You have no idea." He said before leaning forward and kissing Janus. Janus pulled Remus closer by the waist, smiling into the kiss. Remus cupped the back of Janus' head, bringing him closer. Janus pulled back all too soon for Remus' liking.

"Careful, princess." Janus said. "You'll get frostbite."

"Who cares?" Remus asked, rolling his eyes.

"I care." Janus pressed a careful kiss to Remus' lips, pulling away before Remus had time to kiss back. "If you get frostbite, who am I going to sneak out of the house for?"

Remus grinned. "Fair point." He said. "But still, at this point in time, I couldn't care less." He leaned forward and kissed Janus again. He felt Janus grin and sighed into the kiss contentedly. Janus' hands travelled up Remus' back, sending slivers of frost down Remus' spine. Remus shivered and pulled Janus close.

"Like that, princess?" Janus asked into the kiss.

"Mhm." Remus hummed. Janus pulled back, grinning.

"Come on." He said. "What's been going on with Summer?"

Remus rolled his eyes. "I'll tell you if you tell me what's going on with Winter." He said. Janus always wanted to talk about the politics of their kingdoms. Really, all Remus wanted to do was flirt and kiss.

Janus smirked. "Deal." He took Remus' hand and spun him around, one hand still on his waist. Janus dipped Remus, bringing their faces close together. "But first, one more kiss." He said quietly. Remus grinned and closed the gap between Janus and himself. Remus pulled Janus closer, overbalancing him. They fell over, Janus on top of Remus. Janus pulled back in shock.

Remus snickered. "Hook, line and sinker, right into my trap." He said gleefully. Janus shook his head, trying and failing to hide a smile. He got up off of Remus and dusted his clothes down.

"Come on." He said, holding a gloved hand out to Remus.

"You're never any fun." Remus grumbled, grabbing Janus' hand and pulling himself up.

"Well, if that's how you feel, Rem," Janus said, "you don't have to see me anymore." He smirked. "If you could stay away."

Remus laughed. "We'll see." He said.

"Anyway, what is going on with Winter?" Janus asked, tapping the frost scars on the side of his face. "My dad's just passed another stupid territory law. We're going to try invade Autumn again so you'll need to warn them about that, uhm..." Janus pulled his gloves further down his hands. "Oh, yeah. People have been whispering and wondering about where I go every time I come here to meet you."

"What do you say?" Remus asked.

Janus laughed. "I don't say anything. I just act all annoyed and start taking off my gloves." He laughed again. "It scares them right off. They apologise and run like the wind. It's fun to watch them scatter like snowflakes." He laughed once more, this sound darker. "Anyway, what's been going on in Summer?"

Remus shrugged, scrunching up his nose. "Not much." He said. "But I can do this now!" He flicked him thumb a couple of times, eventually lighting a little fire on the end of his thumb. "See!" He said excitedly. "Soon, it'll be my whole hand, dad says!"

Janus took his glove off and closed his hand around Remus' thumb, extinguishing the flame with a hiss and sending threads of ice down Remus' skin.

"Clever, Rem." Janus said, shaking his hand and putting his glove back on. "Good weapon."

Remus rolled his eyes. Janus was definitely born in Winter, all he talked about was cold, boring politics and war. Boring, boring, boring.

"You're so dull sometimes, Jan." Remus said.

Janus smirked and tugged Remus forward by the waist. "You really think that, Princess?" He asked, tilting his head to the side and fake pouting. Remus laughed.

"Maybe not." He said. He leaned forward and gave Janus a playful kiss on the nose. Janus' eyes widened, pink spreading through the part of his face not affected by frost. Remus giggled. "You're adorable." He said.

Janus rolled his eyes. "And you're insufferable. Teasing me like that." He leaned his forehead against Remus'. "You know that's my job, Princess."

"Well, maybe it's time for a career change." Remus said quietly. He leaned forward and kissed Janus again. Janus pulled him closer by the waist so there was basically no space between them. Remus cupped Janus' neck, his fingers messing with the small hairs at the bottom of Janus' head. Remus felt a cold spread through his lips and pulled back, surprised.

"That's cold." He said, shocked. Janus shrugged, not making any moves to let Remus go.

"I did warn you, Rem." He said. "You'll get frostbite."

Remus touched a finger to his lips, seeing if he could still feel anything. "Will it go away?" He asked.

"Eventually." Janus said. "Your lips will go pale if you're not careful, though. Then the secret will really be out."

"Why do we keep this a secret?" Remus asked. "If we got married or something, it'd unite us a lot quicker and easier than invasion."

"Don't ask me, Rem." Janus said. "If it were up to me, Summer and Winter would've been united years ago. But my dad's still clinging on to power. For now, anyway."

Remus narrowed his eyes. "You've got something planned." He said. Slowly, a smile spread across his face. "You've got something planned, Jan."

Janus shrugged. "Let's just say King Peter Dagger might not live to see the invasion of Autumn fail." He said. "Then, there'll be a new king. King Janus Dagger." He laughed silently. "I quite like that. King Janus." He said again, testing it out on his tongue.

"And then?" Remus asked.

Janus pulled Remus forward by his chin gently. "Well, what's a king without a queen by his side?" He asked.
