Seven Years Before The Fall of Insomnia
"Presenting Kingsglaive Nyx Ulric, Kingsglaive Crowe Altius, Kingsglaive Libertus Ostium, and Kingsglaive Pelna Khara!" The guard announced as the four Kingsglaives came in, looking right at my younger brother, my father, and I.

"Your majesty, your highnesses." Nyx Ulric bowed, the other three doing the same as dad sighed.

"Enough formality. Stand up straight." He ordered and the Kingsglaives stood straight then dad looked at me.

"Atalie, choose." He said and I smiled as I slowly walked down the steps, stopping in front of the soldiers.

"Only one, father?" I asked and he nodded as I looked at him, which made me pout.

"Well, I'd choose all four if I could, but I'll take..." I eyed them and smiled, standing before Nyx Ulric.

"You." I said and he looked rightfully confused.

"Your highness?"

"My daughter is very special, despite not being heir to my throne. Nyx Ulric, from this moment on, your only job is to protect her and guard her. You will be at her side all day, even inside the Citadel. I won't force you to be at her side at night, I have plenty of guards for that."

"Sir, I-I don't understand?" Nyx questioned and I huffed.

"You are my personal guard now, numbskull." I said and he looked slightly offended, until he seemed to get it.

"As you order, King Regis." He said and I smiled as I turned and went back to my dad's side.

"The rest of you, out." Dad ordered the other three Kingsglaives and I watched as they left, my father looking up at me.

"I hope you chose correctly, Atalie." I smiled and looked at Nyx Ulric, knowing I had chosen right.

"Princess, if I may, what is so special about you?" Nyx asked as he walked me through the Citadel gardens and I sighed, kneeling to smell the flowers.

"I have visions, Kingsglaive, of the future to come." I said and stood, smoothing out my black dress as I continued to walk with him.

"Visions? I thought only the astrals could see visions." He said and I looked at him then smiled.

"Do you see the color of my eyes, Kingsglaive?" He nodded as he stared at my eyes.

"When I was born, my eyes were as dark as my younger brother's eyes. While he took after father, I took after mother except for the eyes I share with my brother and father and the hair color I got from neither parent. On my thirteenth birthday, my eyes changed to this blue that they are now and I had my first vision. It was of my mother's death, which came true a week later, when my brother was one." I said and got to the shaded bench, sitting down as he stood next to me.

"Sit, Kingsglaive." I smiled and he swallowed, coming to sit next to me.

"Because of my visions, many people seek me out and try to use me against my own people. One nearly got me, just last week." I said and Nyx looked at me.

"Just before you chose me to be your guard." I nodded and looked at him as I held the side of the stone bench.

"Just before I chose you." I said and sighed.

"I'll be honest, Kingsglaive, I don't know much about you. And, if you're to protect me until you die or I die, then I should know you, shouldn't I?" I smiled and he nodded.

"I assume that would be best. What do you want to know?" He asked and I shook my head.

"Where are you from? I know the Kingsglaives are all immigrants, but where did you call home before here?" I asked and he gave me a soft smile.

"Galahd, my friends who were with me in the throne room are also from Galahd. We came here together as children after Galahd was taken by Niflheim." He said and I nodded.

"Do you have family?" I asked, regretting it as a sour look fell over his face.

"I did, a sister and mother. They died in Galahd." He said and I reached out, setting my hand on his.

"I'm sorry I asked-" I stopped as he shook his head then he smiled at me.

"It's alright, really. What else do you want to know?" He asked and I smiled.

"How old are you?"

"Twenty five, Princess." He said and I nodded.

"So, two years older than myself." I said and he smiled as he pulled his hand from underneath my own.

"I suppose." He said and I looked out at the garden, silence falling over us. It wasn't uncomfortable, it was quite... pleasing.

"Are you happy being my guard?" I asked and looked at him, seeing him giving me a strange look.

"Princess, I-"

"Don't lie, I know the immigrants talk about the 'spoiled brat princess'. I'll ask again, are you happy?" I asked and he licked his lips.

"I'll be honest then. When I was first ordered to guard you, I was sure this would be hell. Then, over the last week, I've seen a side to you we immigrants don't often see. Sure, you may be a spoiled princess to all of the kingdom, but I've gotten to see a side of you in this last week that no one else sees." He said and I smiled as I nodded.

"And your answer?" I asked and he softly laughed.

"I'm happy now, happier than I was when ordered to guard you." He said and I nodded, looking at the garden and enjoying the day. That night, as he walked me to my chambers, I was thinking of what he said.

"I hope we become good friends, Nyx Ulric, like my brother with his shield." I said and he nodded.

"As do I, Princess Atalie." I smiled then went to my doors, opening them and shutting my bedroom doors behind me, locking it out of habit. As I prepared for bed, I thought about how normal being around Nyx made me feel. I didn't feel caged, and I hated feeling caged.
