CHAPTER ONE

MOURNFUL ATMOSPHERE, black clothes, and white roses. Anurak couldn't hide the sadness taking over his being.

He was supposed to be happy today since he got the highest score in their exams and won a national competition. He should be celebrating. He should be...

But Narae needs him. Narae needs them. More than ever.

Late na nang makarating sila Wynter at Dominique since kagagaling lang ng dalawa sa New Jersey, family matters.

Nang makita ni Anurak ang dalawa ay papalapit na ito sa kanila. Wynter and Dom slightly bowed to Mr. Chen and Narae, bago lumapit sa may guest book at nagsulat. Both of them also handed over envelopes of condolence money.

After Wyn and Charles did the right practices of a Korean funeral, the lady couldn't help but hug Narae. Kahit si Dom ay hindi rin nakapagpigil at niyakap ng mahigpit ang bunso nila.

"I'm sorry for your loss, Narae. You'll get through this, sweetie," Wynter softly said.

At katulad kanina ay muling umiyak si Narae. Tita Aera's death was really unexpected. She died in a car crash on her way home from work. Narae was preparing for her enrollment at that time and Tito Albert was busy working. Their friend wanted to surprise her mother that night. She got a perfect score on her exams. She was also going to celebrate it with her family but... the accident happened.

"We're just here, Nar. We won't leave you." Dominique caressed her hair.

Narae's sobs became louder and Anurak couldn't help but cry as well. He's really sensitive when it comes to his loved ones. Lalo na kay Narae na itinuring niyang nakababatang kapatid.

Ang buong funeral ay tahimik lang para sa apat. Binabantayan lang ng tatlo ang bunso nila at tinutulungan ang ama nito sa pagbibigay ng pagkain sa mga bisita.

They knew how tired Narae was after all that crying, kaya naman pinagpahinga na nila ito at hinayaang nakasandal sa balikat ni Wynter. Hindi kasi pwedeng tuluyang makatulog sa lamay.

At ang bigat na nadarama ni Narae simula nang mamatay ang mommy niya ay sunod-sunod na nadagdagan sa mga sumunod na taon.

When Narae turned eighteen and went to college, her first boyfriend broke her heart and made her cry all over again. He even took away her innocence when he asked her to prove her love for him. And the DAWN witnessed that moment which resulted in that guy's broken ribs and tons of bruises and wounds.

Then the next year, Narae's father remarried without her knowing, which made her mad at her father and his whore—Narae's words not Anurak's.

These events turned his sweetest little cousin into the naughty and bitter lady she is now, and the three of them didn't really expect it. But they have to support her changes.

Anurak still spoils her while he low-key limits her sexual interaction with men. Wynter stops her and scolds her like a mom if she does something inappropriate. And Dom serves as her bodyguard.

That was their routine for years, and Anurak was happy he met Wyn and Dom. At least he's sure that it wasn't just him who would protect Narae at all costs.

But that responsibility and promise somehow stopped him from having his own plan to be with someone in the future. He had his eyes on his goal and that was to secure Narae's future. Nawala sa isip niya ang sarili niyang kasiyahan.

Even when he became a teacher and he felt all eyes on him, may it be a co-teacher or a student, he never thought of being in a relationship.

He wanted to stay flirting around and messing with people inside their club, and he was satisfied with that.

Kasi para sa kanya, mas mabibigay niya ang karamihan ng atensyon niya sa pinsan. Mas map-protektahan niya ito.

"So, any news from Kuya Angelo?"

Napalingon si Anurak sa pinsang nasa tapat niya't nanonood ng movie. Silang dalawa lang ang nasa penthouse dahil lumabas muna si Dom at naghanap ng pwedeng magawa habang hindi pa nagbubukas ang LUST DAWN. Si Wynter naman ay balitang babalik sa bansa mamayang hapon.

"I miss him na, and for sure, Dom misses him more." Narae paused the movie and faced him. "Imagine! Sa dinami-raming pwedeng makalimutan sa mundo, yung taong pinaka-mahalaga pa sayo. That just sucks."

Mahina namang natawa si Anurak. "Wow. Those words are actually coming from you, hmm? Mukhang bumalik ka na sa pagiging mahilig sa romance ha," pang-aasar niya sa pinsan.

Narae's face showed disgust as she reached for a pillow beside her and threw it at him. Mabilis naman siyang naka-ilag kaya ang ending, nabasa ang unan.

"Lagot ka kay Wynter," pang-aasar na naman niya. "Alam mo namang magrereklamo na naman 'yun kapag may magulo sa penthouse."

Sumimangot naman si Narae. "Ba't ka kasi nasa swimming pool? Edi sana hindi nabasa yung unan."

Anurak rolled his eyes. "Ayy so kasalanan ko pa pala."

"Of course naman, Oppa." Ngumisi si Narae. "Saka kung ayaw ni Unnie sa magugulo sa penthouse, edi bakit pa tayo nandito?"

Pareho silang natawa. Kapag ganitong silang dalawa lang ang nasa penthouse, madalas nilang pag-usapan ang dalawang nawawala, o kaya naman ay bibili silang dalawa ng mga bagong gamit para sa penthouse at hihintaying pagalitan ni Wynter kapag nakabalik na ito.

Napansin naman ni Anurak na tumayo na si Narae at pinatay ang TV. "Oh, where are you going?"

Narae pouted. "I'm hungry, Oppa."

Napailing na lang si Anurak saka umahon sa pagkakababad sa swimming pool. He quickly dried himself with a towel and walked to the kitchen.

Sa kanilang apat, si Anurak ang chef at kapag nago-overtime siya sa trabaho, makikita na lang niya ang tatlo na nagpa-deliver ng pagkain. Ganoon sila ka-walang future sa pagluluto. Though kahit papaano ay natututo na sila Narae at Charles kapag nanonood sa kanya, pero si Wynter? Wala na siyang pag-asa.

Anurak continued cooking and Narae assisted him, 'yun ang eksenang nadatnan ni Charles.

"Why are you cooking without me?" The newcomer frowned.

Mahina namang natawa si Anurak. "Just wash your hands now and chop those meats for me."

Agad namang tiniklop ni Charles ang sleeves ng suot nitong damit hanggang siko saka sinunod ang utos niya.

"How about me, Oppa? I'm already done." Narae showed her chopped vegetables.

"Take the smallest pot over there." Itinuro ni Anurak ang ikalawang cabinet sa taas. "Then add the gosari and four cups of water. Medium heat lang and wait for it to boil."

"Got it, Oppa." Narae followed his instructions.

Halos dalawang oras silang nagluto at naghintay para sa Yukgaejang nila, a Korean spicy beef stew, one of Narae's favorites, Hoagies, one of Charles' favorites, and Khao Pad, Anurak's favorite.

All of them were satisfied with what they cooked and ate for lunch. Sakto lang iyon sa pagdating ni Wynter. Laking gulat nila nang makitang kasama nito si Angelo, Charles' love interest and Wynter's step-brother.

Kaya ang ending, all three sets of eyes were staring at Charles' reaction. Napailing naman si Anurak. For someone to have that kind of pain and longing expression written all over his face, Anurak finally got curious about how love actually works.

But whatever, I have no time for that. I'll only keep my eyes on my friends, my little cousin, my family, and my work. Anurak told himself that he will never let anyone distract him from his goals. No one.

Unfortunately, Anurak didn't know that Cupid was about to come knocking at his door.
