"Penny for your thoughts?" Dina asked after a few minutes of silence.
"It's fucking cold out here."
"That's total bullshit but okay. I'll play along. It does feel like the temperature has dropped. Do you think we could be experiencing another blizzard?"
"Maybe. I just hope that it doesn't show up while we're out here."
They went silent once again.
"Ellie, I'm serious now. What's on your mind?"
"I don't wanna talk about it."
Dina turned her horse and stopped right in front of her.
"No. Don't give me that. Is something wrong?"
"No. Dina I just...look...I just wanna focus on our route. Okay. Please. Maybe when we're back home I'll fill you in. But right now...I just wanna get this taken care of and get back."
Dina nodded. Though she wasn't okay with not knowing what was wrong with Ellie and not knowing how she could help, she respected her answer.
"Okay. I'm sorry for pushing."
"It's okay. Really it's..." Ellie trailed off when she noticed some blood to her right.
"What the hell?"
She moved closer and saw that there was a moose that had been ripped open. She stopped in front of the corpse and dismounted Shimmer.
"What the fuck?" Dina asked, standing next to her.
"Ugh, that smell."
"It looks like infected did this," Ellie said.
"How many you think it would take to bring down a moose?"
"More than one, that's for sure. But where the hell are they?"
She stood in place and scanned the area. An old grocery store was just to the right of them.
"Let's go and find out," Dina said.
The both of them climbed over a fallen tree and made their way further into what they assumed was the parking lot. Dina walked right up the boarded up windows and listened.
"I can hear some inside. How the fuck did they even get in there?" she said.
"More importantly, how do we get in there?"
The both of them looked all around to see if there was a break that they could get through.
"Dina. Over here," Ellie said after a while.
There was a window that had been shattered and had blood near the bottom of it. Careful not to cut herself with any glass that may have still been around, she quietly made herself into the building, Dina following close behind her.
