The three of them made their closer and closer to the TV station. On their way there, for the most part, the only thing they had come across was the infected. Taking care of them was nothing new and by no means challenging. By now, one could call the three of them experts in taking out the infected. Though they were sort of relieved that they hadn't run into anyone, at the same time, they grew increasingly nervous as they kept going.
"I don't like this," Dina finally said.
"We're almost there," Ellie said.
"No. I mean...don't you guys think that it's weird that we haven't come across someone by now. Not even a base camp? It's too quiet and that makes me nervous."
"Hey, lower your voices," Joel whispered.
They had reached what was obviously a small town. Houses were mixed together with mom and pop shops. Dina couldn't help but imagine what this place was like before everything. She often did. Before all this death, was the world a bit simpler? Were people actually able to live without the constant fear of the infected and other people wanting what you had? She imagined it but at the same time it was hard for her to picture it and believe it. Ellie listened intently for the reason behind Joel asking them to quiet down.
"Down!" Joel whispered harshly.
The streets were filled with tall grass that no one had been keeping presentable. Tall enough for the three of them to be completely hidden within it. Seconds later, there was a group of people that came into view that were armed. Joel was the first to hear the panting of what sounded like dogs. A bark came and then he knew that the dogs were trained to pick up certain scents. They were gonna need to take care of this as quietly as they could.
"We're gonna need to split up. We'll make it hard for them to get us all at once," Joel said.
"No, Joel. We stick together."
"Ellie, we have to move through them. They have trained dogs that will catch our scent shortly. Splitting up will confuse the dogs and that's when we attack. We do this quietly. Silencers on the guns. We don't make a sound unless we have to. I'll do my best to take the dogs out first. We meet back here when it's done, yeah?"
"Joel..."
"I'm not saying it will but if something happens to me, promise me that the two of you will finish this."
"Joel we..."
"Promise me. For Beth."
Ellie looked at him and nodded.
"For Beth."
"Let's get this done."
Joel went one way while Ellie and Dina went another. Ellie couldn't help but keep an eye in the direction Joel had gone.
"Ellie. You need to focus. Joel is gonna be fine. He's more than capable of taking care of himself."
Dina was quick to notice the nervous state Ellie was in the second Joel took off in the opposite direction. In order for the both of them to get out of this situation alive, Dina knew that the both of them needed to concentrate on the obstacle the three of them were currently facing. The two moved slowly into a rundown building nearby and got their weapons ready. Dina attached a silencer to her pistol while Ellie pulled out her trusty bow and arrows. They then heard the sound of a brick hitting the pavement across from them. Joel had decided to grab their attention. They were all gonna make it out of here in one piece. Ellie was gonna make sure of that.
Joel had snuck into the first building to his left and got his weapons ready. He too had packed a few silencers and a bow and arrow. He heard one of the dogs let out a low growl. He knew that it was close. Looking around, he got a hold of one of the many bricks that had come off of the side of the building and threw it far away from him. The dog barked and headed in the direction the brick had fallen. While it was distracted, he used that to draw an arrow and take out the WLF that had come along with it. After a few minutes, the dog began looking for its owner then started whining when he couldn't find them. Joel seized that opportunity and took the dog out as well. The three took out every single WLF that was in that area without so much as a slip up. They made a good team. When it was all done, the three of them met back in the same spot they had started.
"Was that the last of them?" Dina asked.
"Yeah. I think so. You girls alright?"
"Yeah. Not a single scratch," Ellie said.
"That's a relief. Let's keep going. I can see those tall buildings. From here on out, we don't let our guard down for anything."
Dina and Ellie nodded and followed Joel who led the way. Suddenly out of nowhere, there was a growl and then a dog was on top of Dina.
"Dina!" Ellie yelled.
It had caught them all off guard and a shot then fired past them. Joel and Ellie ducked down close by. Dina kept the dog at bay but it was getting harder for her to keep it that way. Joel then made his way over and used his knife to stab the dog and get it off of her. He then finished it off.
"You motherfucking trespassers!" Someone across the street shouted.
"I'm gonna kill you all!"
"I'll go right and the two of you go left. We'll corner this asshole," Joel said.
"Way ahead of you."
The three of them split up once more and went on to silence their loud enemy.
"Okay. That was the last of them. Let's keep going," Ellie said.
Looking at the map once again, the three of them headed for the TV station. It was a long way there but they were eventually able to make it to where they could see the building.
"We're getting closer, Joel."
"Yeah. Yeah we are. We just gotta push a little more."
Ellie nodded and they went on. After about half an hour, Joel came across a pile of bricks. An old BBQ pit that had been hit back when the end of the world had first started. He didn't think anything of it until he saw something that he had definitely seen before.
"Stop. Back up a bit."
Ellie and Dina had been in a deep conversation when they did as he said. He picked up the brick and threw it a few feet in front of him. An explosion rang out.
"Holy shit! What the hell? Did they really rig this place to be a land mine?" Dina exclaimed.
Ellie and Joel looked at each other.
"It couldn't be..."
"No. He wouldn't be stupid enough to leave. He had that town fully secured."
"You never know, Joel. It's been awhile."
"I know it has. But Bill would rather die than leave a place where he has traps set up all over."
"Um, who's Bill?" Dina interjected.
"Someone we knew before coming to Jackson City. If they were thinking like he was, it's easy to assume that this wasn't the only one."
"Right. Keep your eyes peeled and let's take a few of these bricks with us."
They had a clear path to the TV station and so they used the bricks to set off any and all the traps they came across. They didn't like the fact that they were practically giving away their location but there was no other way. They didn't want to be blown to bits when they were so close to getting the information that they needed.
