It took almost two weeks before the three of them had arrived in Seattle. All the while, both Joel and Ellie exchanged some of the stories that Dina hadn't heard about Beth.
"So Beth had the opportunity to be world renowned photographer and she passed it up?" she asked Joel.
"I honestly wish she hadn't. She was so talented. She'd kill me if I was telling you girls all this but she chose to give that up for her family. For the people she loved more than anything in the world. When she heard her dad was sick, there was no stopping her. There was nothing more important to her than her father."
Ellie looked over at him.
"I think you and Sarah were tied for first place, Joel."
He sighed the stopped his horse.
"I'll never get to ask her...there's so many things that I still wanted to ask her...now...now I'll never know."
Ellie went and stopped in front of him.
"Joel. Don't. Now is not the time to think about that. We've got a job to do. I can do this. I am gonna do this. But if it's too much for you, you can head back."
Joel scoffed and looked right at her.
"Do you really think I'm gonna let you do this on your own?"
"No. And I want you with me on this."
He inhaled then exhaled.
"I'm okay. Let's get to work."
He started to move his horse and Ellie followed him. The trees passed by them as they kept on their path. It was a few minutes before the trees parted and they came across a beaten road with abandoned cars on either side of it. Straight ahead of them was a gate with graffiti on it.
"WLF? This must be their QZ," Ellie said.
The gate was the size of the one back home the only difference being that it was made of metal.
"Must be. Now, how do you suppose we get over it?" Joel asked.
Ellie and Dina dismounted Shimmer and started to look around. Joel made his way closer to the entrance and looked closely. There must be some way that the three of them could get over this thing. He dismounted his horse and went over to where there looked be an opening. He slid the small opening to the side and he could see that on the other side of the gate were generators. The gate was electric.
"Ellie? Dina?"
He turned to see Ellie making her way toward a broken down platform above him.
"Ellie!"
She turned to look at him.
"Shh! Joel, we don't know if we're alone."
"Exactly. So what the hell are you doing?"
