Train in Vain

The group retired to their cabins after dinner. Stevie stood outside her door with a box of food in her hand. Joseph had asked her to take dinner to Jotaro, but she truthfully didn't want to go in the room at all. She relaxed her face into a neutral "nothing's wrong" expression, mentally preparing herself to encounter him. Maybe I'll just peak at his aura, and if it really is blue, then I'll get someone to switch rooms with me, she thought. She engaged her stand and entered the room.

Jotaro was sleeping on his back wearing only black silk boxers. And his aura was scarlet red. Stevie gulped as she gazed over his huge muscular figure, the silk boxers leaving little to imagination. She noticed the bandage still on his right hand along with dark purple bruises going up his arm to his shoulder. She bit her lip and set the to-go box on the small fold-down table.

"Lock the door," Jotaro said, his eyes still closed. His aura quickly faded from scarlet red to light blue.

"Yeeee!" Stevie jumped. "You startled me," she said and locked the door as he commanded. What the hell was that aura changing trick? she asked herself.

"The fight earlier ended up in the river, my clothes are wet," Jotaro said, offering her an answer to the question she was too stunned to ask.

"Oh," Stevie said and sat on her own bed across from him. "I, uh, brought you dinner."

"Hmph," Jotaro opened his eyes and sat up. He winced as he grabbed the box and opened it, then gave an approving grunt before digging in.

"Your shoulder looks bad," Stevie said.

"It feels bad, too," he said between mouthfuls, not looking up from his food.

Stevie laid down and covered her eyes with the crook of her elbow so she wasn't just watching Jotaro eat. She wondered how she would get into her pajamas, which was just panties and a large t-shirt, with Jotaro in the room. And she could have sworn he changed his aura from red to blue right in front of her eyes. Of course, if she asked him, he would know she had been spying on his emotions.

She heard a hiss and uncovered her eyes to see Jotaro had finished eating and was trying to remove the bloody bandage from his hand. "Do you... want help?" she said slowly.

He shifted his eyes to look at her and hummed an affirmative. She got up and gently unwrapped his hand to look at the small scrapes in his palm that made up one massive scrap. "Wow" escaped her lips.

"Would you stop staring at it and redress it now?" Jotaro asked impatiently.

Stevie held his hand in her own and tenderly patted the wound with an alcohol wipe before putting fresh gauze on it. "All done," Stevie said. She looked up at his face to see he hadn't been looking at his hand but rather was watching her. Their eyes met for a few seconds before Jotaro broke the gaze by looking at the floor.

"I'm sorry I snapped at you this morning," Stevie said.

"I don't really think you're a bitch," Jotaro replied, still looking at the floor. I guess that's an apology, she thought. They sat in silence for a minute before Stevie moved back to her own bed.

Don't say it
Don't say it
Don't say it

"When I came in earlier, your aura changed from scarlet to blue when you noticed me in the room," Stevie said.

"Yare yare," Jotaro muttered. "Don't you think that's an invasion of privacy?" he asked.

"Yessss," she groaned, "I have thought that... but I only wanted to know because I was going to change rooms with someone if you were in here thinking about how much you hate me."

"So blue makes it look like I hate you?" he asked.

"Yes."

"Good. I was trying to make it look that way in order to gauge what your stand's abilities are. I was steeling myself against you to see if there was a way for someone to resist your mind control."

Stevie's felt her heart racing in her chest. "That's fucked up," she said.

"What's more fucked up is how fucking hard it was repeatedly telling myself that you were disgusting."

Stevie's heart was so loud in her ears that she was afraid Jotaro could hear it. "Well, you have figured out how to resist my stand. That's cool I guess," she said, trying to sound nonchalant and not like she wanted to pounce on his half-naked form right there and then.

"Yare yare," he said, getting up to turn the lights off. He laid down in the darkness, stared at the ceiling, and listened to Stevie sliding her pants off now that he couldn't see her.

"Goodnight."
