Jotaro, Kakyoin, and Stevie were woken up by Joseph firmly knocking on their door before 8am.
"Get dressed, no dilly-dallying. There's a ferry heading across the Andaman Sea that will take two days to reach the mouth of the Irrawaddy in Myanmar. We'll find a way across the Bay of Bengal after that. It leaves in 15 minutes," Joseph said when Jotaro opened the door. He peeked his head around Jotaro to look at Stevie. "Those PJs look comfy on you, Stevie," he said with a wink before leaving.
"Psshhhh he didn't compliment my pajamas," Kakyoin cracked, holding out the hem of his cherry-print top.
Breakfast on the ferry was tea and biscuits with fruit. Stevie was again impressed when Joseph pulled out the food from his bag. He sat next to her and handed her a biscuit. "You sleep okay last night?" Joseph asked, hoping to glean who shared a bed with whom. He felt conflicted - despite his happy marriage, he couldn't help his attraction to Stevie. She stirred him in ways he hadn't felt in... well... 5 or 6 years. Maybe I've just become one of those perverted old men, he thought, the kind who only chase after young, beautiful, tough college women. Damn, I have a type.Joseph figured she would never go for the old man when there were 4 younger, attractive guys around - especially his grandson. It was just an old man's fantasy to think otherwise. But he could still treat her like a queen. And if he couldn't have her, his grandson was the next best thing. So Joseph decided that his own way to love her would be to be happy for her and Jotaro, if it came to that. Of course, Jotaro needs an attitude adjustment if he's ever going to really woo a woman with anything besides his looks, Joseph thought while making prolonged eye contact with Jotaro. Jotaro narrowed his eyes at the old man, wondering what he was staring at.
"Yea, I slept great," Stevie smiled, "in pajamas, in a real bed that wasn't shaking on a train. And it wasn't a sleeping bag on the ground. Thanks, Joseph."
He smiled back at her. Not exactly the hot gossip he was searching for, but still, seeing her happy made him happy. He made a mental note to tell Jotaro what a catch she was whenever they got some privacy. There would be no harm in playing Cupid, right? In the meantime, another prolonged stare at his grandson would do.
"What about the three of you?" Stevie asked Joseph, Avdol, and Polnareff. "Did you have a good night's rest?"
"Oh yes, of course it's always nice to sleep in a real bed," Joseph said, "even if it's still not quite like home."
"So did two of you fit in one bed with your giant broad manly shoulders? Seems like a tight squeeze," Stevie asked. Jotaro and Kakyoin perked up, remembering their pillow talk about Polnareff. Joseph was impressed with her brashness, that she basically asked what he was too coy to ask her - the sleeping arrangement.
Avdol answered, gently holding a teacup with both hands. "Polnareff and I shared a bed with our feet by each other's heads. So yes, we fit, although I'm tempted to say that I wish we had let Polnareff go out like he wanted to. The man kicks in his sleep!"
"You guys never let me have any fun," Polnareff whined, popping the rest of his biscuit in his mouth and washing it down with tea. He crossed his legs and leaned back.
"The last time I let you have fun, the woman was a stand user and tried to kill you," Joseph said sternly.
"Yes, but then we met Stevie!" Polnareff countered. "Imagine who else we could have met last night!"
"Stand users attract other stand users," Avdol said. "If there had been another stand user like Miss Stevie around Ranong, they likely would have run into us one way or another before we left."
"You mean stand users are like magnets to each other?" Kakyoin asked. He sipped his tea with a pinkie out. Avdol nodded and also sipped tea.
Jotaro looked at Stevie long enough for them to make eye contact. Was that why he felt such a connection to her? Was it just a stand user thing? She smiled at him, which tugged at his heart and led him to believe it was something more. He pulled his hat over his face to hide the blush creeping in.
"Yare yare daze."
"I have a surprise!" Joseph announced. "I got us a cabin on the ferry with 3 bunk beds, so we can all sleep together tonight!"
Tea came out of Kakyoin's nose as he tried to suppress a laugh, turning it into a cough. Polnareff slapped Kakyoin's back a few times with a worried expression. "Don't you think all of us in one room's gonna be a little crowded?" Polnareff asked.
