"So, Joseph, do you have a story about rippling coffee saving your life or something?" Stevie asked playfully as they hiked toward Ranong.
"Why do you ask?" he replied with his signature toothy grin. He pushed the brim of his hat up to get a better look at her.
"You seem to have a story like that for everything," Stevie answered coyly, almost flirtatiously. Jotaro glanced back at them, trying to look casual and uninterested.
"Well, not me, but my grandfather, Jonathan Joestar. A rippling glass of wine saved his life when he couldn't see his enemy. So, it's not just a child's game of hide-and-seek."
"What was your grandfather like?" Stevie asked.
"Ah," Joseph said wistfully, "I never met him. But his friend Robert Speedwagon was like a father to me. Everything I know about Jonathan, I heard from Speedwagon and my granny, Erina."
"Wait, like the Speedwagon foundationj?" Stevie asked, a little skeptical.
"Yep, that's him!" Joseph laughed. "You know he was a back-alley hood rat kind of guy until he met my grandfather? Turned him right around. Instead of robbing people, he started investing in oil! Can you believe that? I guess that's just the kind of guy Jonathan was."
"Wait a second," Polnareff said and looked back. "You mean the famous Speedwagon used the money he robbed from people to invest in oil?"
"Not exactly," Joseph grinned. "I never got my Granny Erina to confirm this, but I heavily suspect her and Speedwagon were lovers after my grandfather's death! Which also leads me to believe the money he invested was given to him by my granny! Her inheritance when Jonathan died."
Kakyoin and Polnareff gasped. Jotaro let out a "Tch."
"That's incredible. The Speedwagon Foundation sponsored the orphanage I grew up in," Stevie said.
"Oh, we did?" Joseph said. "What a small world."
"What do you mean 'we?'" Stevie asked.
"Oh! Uh..." Joseph rubbed the back of his neck. "Speedwagon might have left his foundation to me when he passed away."
"YOU RUN THE SPEEDWAGON FOUNDATION?" Stevie, Polnareff, and Kakyoin all yelled in unison. Of course, Avdol and Jotaro already knew.
"I wouldn't say 'run it'... I have other people do that!" a sweat drop formed on Joseph's temple.
"So, your granny and Speedwagon, ehhh?" Polnareff joked after a beat.
"She smacked me over the head everytime I asked about it!" Joseph said. "But some things, you just know." He looked at Stevie and gave her a wink.
Oh my god, does he know about me and Jotaro? she thought. No no... he's just being goofy, as always.
A/n fun fact: in the japanese version anime, joseph asks erina if she was fucking speedwagon. but in the english version, he asks erina if speedwagon and jonathan were lovers 🥳
