I got home and shut the door, trying not to wake Dad up. I slid down against the door and put my head in my hands, crying. My life is such a mess.
"Cadi? Are you okay?" Dad asked, coming up the stairs.
"Yeah, I'm good. I thought you were sleeping." I said, wiping my eyes. I didn't want him to know I was crying about something so stupid.
"Where'd you go?"
"I went to try and get her to call off the custody battle."
"Why would you do that?"
"I don't want to leave you Daddy." I began to cry again and went to hug him.
"I won't let it happen." He pulled away from the hug to look me in the eyes. "I won't let her win."
"I'm sorry."
"For what Cadi?"
"I should have trusted you. You were obviously keeping me from her for a good reason and I should have known that."
"It's okay. You had every right to wonder who your mother was and there's no way you could've known this was going to happen."
"It's still feel like it's my fault though."
"It's not your fault. We will fix this. Don't worry about it. You should go get some sleep."
"Okay. Goodnight Daddy."
"Night Cadi."
I went to bed and I must have been pretty tired because I fell asleep right away.
I woke up to yelling coming from upstairs. I got up and quietly walked up the stairs but I stopped on the last one when I saw Mom standing in the kitchen. She was screaming at Dad and he was trying to calm her down. I watched Dad for a while and he looked really scared. I looked at Mom again and I noticed she was holding a knife.
I wanted to scream. I wanted to run and save Dad. But I knew if I made a sound it would only make things worse. So, I quietly made my way back to my room. I grabbed my phone off of my dresser and called the police. I watched out my window and impatiently waited for someone to show up.
I heard the sirens and then I heard something terrible from upstairs.
"DADDY" I yelled as I ran up the stairs.
He was laying on the floor motionless.
"You're a monster!" I screamed as I ran over and kneeled beside him crying.
