The next day Angie woke up quite late. She had decided not to return to work until the afternoon; she was still recovering after all and, on top of that, she had an emotional evening. After a hearty lunch she ordered a taxi to get to the station. She was going to have to spend a good part of her day filling out reports on the latest events, with one arm in a sling it wasn't going to be a piece of cake!
Arrived at the police station, she went directly to the automatic doors leading to the offices as usual. But barely entered, Chris came to take her to the break room. Several of her colleagues were gathered there: Ben, smiling, Katia, from the reception who was holding a huge box of donuts, Gavin who for once didn't seem angry, Hank, a half-nibbled donut in mouth and of course Connor, with a silver balloon in his left hand reading "good recovery". Angie was very moved that they thought of her!
She thanked them. Katia offered her a donut, they looked so appetizing that she accepted even though she had just eaten. Chris asked her how long she was going to have to endure the splint and if it had been very painful. She must have told them the whole story: the apartment full of pigeons, the chase, the deviant's suicide and her own fall, prevented by Connor.
Some congratulated the android, but not everyone.
- You'd have paid attention and not dislocating her shoulder in the process, said Gavin Reed treacherously.
- Don't start bothering him, Reed, he saved my life, Angie retorted in defense of her friend.
- It'd piss me off to have to thank a tin can, he concluded, recovering his bad humor and leaving the room.
Angie didn't understand his reaction, there were other androids at the station, although they were much less advanced than Connor, but generally Gavin ignored them or just gave them the necessary orders. So why was he behaving like this with Connor?
- Good riddance, Hank commented.
Then the conversation resumed on a lighter tone and Angie forgot about Gavin Reed.
__________
- Can I see you in private?
It was Connor that Angie hadn't heard approaching like always. He had left his balloon in a corner.
- Of course, she replied intrigued.
She looked around for a place to chat quietly and motioned for him to follow her into the observation room. The room as well as the interrogation room behind the two-way glass, was empty as almost everyone was either at the party or investigating, there were apparently no suspects to question today.
- What did you want from me ? She asked, turning to Connor.
- I ... I have a present for you, the android said, taking a step forward. I think it's a thing humans do when someone was hospitalized.
- A present ? You shouldn't have to !
Angie was surprised, had he bought her something? What was that ? Connor stepped closer still, he leaned over her and ... put his lips to hers!
Software instability
Angie widened her eyes, what was wrong with him? Did he have a glitch in his program? She didn't understand, but… it was strangely pleasant, his lips were soft and warm although awkward. She quickly came to her senses and gently pushed him away.
- What's the matter with you ? She asked him incredulously.
The android looked puzzled, his LED flashed yellow, he tried to analyze the reaction of the young woman.
