Quick ! She leaps from the stairs, pushing everyone in her path rashly. The crowd was almost entirely made up of androids, their protests were generally peaceful but this time there was no time to question their demands or why some of them seemed aggressive. Only Connor's fate worried her.
Raising the flow of androids against the tide seemed to take hours for her because she was afraid of not arriving in time to avoid an incident. From a distance she could see the group that had taken Connor to surround him, approaching like a pack of wolves on their prey. Connor kept a neutral face, but Angie suspected he was just trying not to show his fear.
- Leave him alone! She yelled.
But her voice was lost in the surrounding clamor. She struggled but the crowd pulled her away, most of the androids moving forward without paying attention to her.
When the crowd finally got thinner and she was able to get a bit closer to the small group, she saw that one of the men was about to hit Connor.
But the latter quickly dodged with a flexible movement. Caught in his tracks, the man passed him and Connor took the opportunity to slap him in the back which sent him on his mates. Two more androids surrounded him, but he grabbed one by the arm and used it for support to send a powerful kick in the abdomen of the second. And he continued like this, barely letting himself be touched, but delivering all the blows he could deliver. He didn't need her to defend himself. He knew how to fight very effectively. Several androids lay on the ground around him, and those still standing hesitated to approach him, they had not counted on such resistance.
- Hold him, damn it! Exclaimed a JB300 who seemed to lead the others.
Angie bumped into a young android and finally came right behind them. Just in time to see a huge TW400 android grab Connor from behind and squeeze him so he can't move. But he still tried to struggle violently, with a tenfold rage. She barely recognized him, his face was distorted with hatred now. She cried out for them to let him go, but they didn't hear.
The JB300 approached Connor threateningly. He raised his fist, then smashed it on his face. Horrified, Angie watched as her friend received a shower of blows for what seemed like an eternity. Why wasn't Connor reacting anymore? Angie drew her gun to intervene when the androids finally let go. Connor slumped to the ground as if his legs weren't carrying him anymore.
- If we see you again, we won't be so indulgent, deviant hunter, dropped the JB300, not without spitting once behind his feet to show his contempt before making a sign to his companions to abandon him there.
Angie followed them with her eyes, her service weapon still in hand in case they changed their minds and retraced their steps, but they finally disappeared around the corner. She should have stopped them and taken them to the station, but what could she do alone with half a dozen androids ready to do battle?
Finally she was able to run over to Connor, kneeling by his side to see if he was okay.
- Connor! Connor! She called in a worried voice.
Physically there was no sign of the fight he had just fought. Obviously he wouldn't have any echymosis or migraine, but there were also no traces of thirium or scratches on his artificial skin, even his clothes were intact. On the other hand, his gaze was blank, his body was shaking and he had no reaction except that he repeated over and over "Not the bear, not the bear!".
Angie felt so helpless, not knowing what to do to help him. She ventured to shake him by the shoulder. He jumped and raised his arm in a defensive reflex. She drew back quickly, ready to dodge his blow, but he recognized her at the last minute and lowered his hand. At least he was no longer amorphous.
