Angie hurried to retrieve her gun a little further and tried to calm her choppy breathing, a corpse was not supposed to gasp after a breathtaking kiss. She was still feeling the effects, her blood was beating faster, her heart was racing, her skin was shivering with the lust that Connor inspired in her.
She risked a glance at him, he had resumed his place next to the mechanical arms, his face motionless, as if absent. She would have liked to have had the ability to look impassive while their bodies were still filled with passion two minutes before.
She carefully hid her gun in the folds of her jacket and then pretended to be dead when she heard the two men arrive. Hank moaned, cursing his jailer, which reassured her about his state of health. Through her lashes, she saw his figure enter the room, both hands above his head.
- Connor! He exclaimed when he discovered the android.
He rushed forward but obviously Connor didn't react, just staring straight ahead.
- Stop! Zlatko warned him, pointing him with his rifle. Stay here, quiet!
He shoved Hank back into the back of the room. He saw his teammate, lying on the ground against the wall. She saw his face crumble, when he thought he understood that she was dead. His expression pained her, she was sorry to inflict this pain on him but forced herself not to move as long as Zlatko still had his rifle in hand.
Hank fell to his knees beside her with tears in his eyes and Zlatko lost interest in the scene. So quickly she opened her eyes and grabbed her teammate's hand. He jumped in shock and she was afraid he would scream loudly, so she put a finger in front of her mouth to tell him to remain silent while giving him a wink signifying that she controlled the situation. Hank recovered very quickly, entering into her game. Head down, deceptively sad, he positioned himself so that she could prepare her weapon discreetly.
- Murderer! You killed her! You killed her! He moaned louder and louder to drown out the clicking noises.
- You'll join her soon if you don't shut your mouth! Threatened Zlatko. RK800, lock him in the back room. And shut him up! He ordered Connor, exasperated by Hank's tears.
Playing his role to perfection, the android obeyed, forcing Hank to stand up without undue softness, holding his wrists while pushing him to move forward.
- Connor, what are you doing? Leave me ! Angie is dead! Cried the lieutenant.
Then the sound of his voice subsided as he and Connor walked away down the hall. Believing himself to be alone, Zlatko finally put his rifle against the wall. This was the moment Angie had been waiting for! She took advantage of his having his back to her to get up slowly and approach very discreetly. She raised the barrel of her revolver to rest it on the man's neck. The latter stiffened, surprised.
- Hands up, she stated coldly, turn around slowly and no sudden movement.
Zlatko reluctantly obeyed. Still aiming at him, she pushed the rifle out of reach.
- You gonna have to kill me, dear, he challenged her once in front of her, I have only one order to give and my androids will come to defend me ... starting with your dear Connor.
- Really ? Are you sure? She asked, imitating his words a moment earlier. Hank! Connor! You can come back, she said to her friends.
The two men, who were not very far, ran to her call to stand on either side of her.
- I called for backup, Hank clarified, they won't be long.
- I see ... Zlatko commented, temporarily taken aback when he saw that Connor was on their side again. I don't know how you did it but we'll see if your technique works on the ten other androids under my command ...
He didn't have time to carry out his threat, without warning Connor had just grabbed his executioner by the neck as he had done with Angie a few minutes before, lifting him off the ground several inches.
- Where are they ? He asked abruptly. Where are the others ?
His face expressed rage, his hatred for the man who had given him a year of nightmares. The latter struggled, kicking his legs and trying to lift the android's fingers from his throat. But despite his delicate posture, Zlatko taunted him, responding with a smirk to his questions. Then the android squeezed tighter.
- Connor, let him go! Angie ordered.
- I was on the verge of killing you because of him! He exclaimed mercilessly. This man is a monster, he doesn't deserve to live.
Then he tightened his grip again, until the man's face turned red and his body stopped shaking so much.
- Let him go, please! Hank, say something, Angie pleaded, distraught that he might commit murder.
But the lieutenant didn't intervene, seeming to approve of his friend's violent methods. Was she the only reasonable person of the three? She too wanted to avenge Connor and his comrades, but not at this cost.
- He'll be judged, she said. We'll do this properly.
He finally began to listen to her. A resigned expression began to paint on his face.
- You're not a killer, Connor, she continued fervently. Don't become what he wanted you to be!
This time her arguments had the desired effect, Connor let go of Zlatko who crashed to the ground brutally, coughing and rubbing his neck on which was imprinted with the traces of the fingers of the android.
Angie huffed, relieved, she put her hand on Connor's bare arm, he jumped but finally looked away from the man kneeling at his feet to look at her. She slipped her hand into his and saw him finally regain a calm expression. Then she approached him with the intention of hugging him but Zlatko's voice stopped her.
- How touching, he said between two fits of coughing. But I'll never confess anything, I only found a new purpose for androids in distress. You should have let him kill me, that's his true nature anyway ... he's good at it ... killing ...
Feeling a rush of anger rise in her, Angie landed a good right hook right on his jaw, silencing him immediately.
- Shut up! She yelled in front of Connor and Hank dumbfounded and admiring.
Embarrassed by her impulsive gesture, she took the handcuffs from her pocket and tied the wrists of the defendant, finally silent, behind his back.
- You have the right to remain silent, she caught up, reciting his rights. Anything you say can be used against you in court ...
When she was done, Hank forced the man to stand up and walk forward.
- It's okay, I'm taking over, the reinforcements won't be long.
Angie thanked him with a nod and watched him push the suspect towards the exit, cursing him. Finally she returned her attention to Connor who was looking at her fondly.
- Thank you, he began.
- For what ? The punch? She asked jokingly. It wasn't very professional, I shouldn't have. Besides, it hurts like hell, she complained, wincing and shaking her right hand.
- No, I mean, thank you for that too, he replied with an amused smile, rubbing her aching knuckles between his fingers to relieve her. Thanks ... for keeping me from killing him.
- You're welcome. Contrary to what Zlatko says, I know very well that killing is not in your nature, you're a detective, not a murderer.
- I would still have been able to kill him instantly you know ...
- I know. But you didn't. Besides, you could have crushed my windpipe in a snap of your fingers too if you wanted to, instead of slowly choking me. It's like you gave me a chance.
- Maybe that even without memory my body remembers what is important ...
He ran his fingers gently over the bluish mark his fingers had left on the delicate skin of her neck. She shivered at his touch.
- Sorry again ... he added sadly.
- I'll get over it quickly, don't worry about it, she reassured him with a smile. Come on, she continued, taking his hand, let's go back up with Hank and get out of this horrible place once and for all.
