When they got to the station, Hank was sitting at his desk, he seemed to have calmed down. Angie walked over to him decisively, still pulling Connor behind her and stopped dead in front of her boss.
- Hank, Connor knows where-
- I don't wanna know anythin' that maniac told him! He interrupted her.
- Look, he didn't actually kill the girl, Kamski just have to find a new body for her ...
- Still he fired!
- I'd thought that the destruction of an android wouldn't matter to you. Why is it making you so angry now?
- Because ... Because ... Hank muttered, then sighed heavily.
But they couldn't continue this conversation, Captain Fowler called them into his office. The three of them took their places in front of the Captain, Connor to the side still neutral and unmoved, Angie beside him was quite nervous and Hank was circling around waiting to find out what his boss wanted from him. Fowler didn't hesitate.
- You're off the case. The FBI is taking over.
- What? Angie and Hank asked at the same time.
- But we're onto something, exclaimed the young woman.
- We... We just need more time... added his teammate.
- Callahan, you're not even supposed to be on the case, the captain interrupted. I haven't said anything until then because I thought you would smooth things over between Hank and the android that CyberLife imposed on us, but you don't have a say.
- I'm sure we can... Hank tried.
- Hank, Fowler cut him off, you don't get it. This isn't just another investigation, it's a fucking civil war! It's out of our hands now... We're talking about national security here.
Angie fell silent, she hadn't imagined this story would get so big. She glanced at Connor, then returned her attention to Hank.
- Fuck that! Resumed this one. You can't just pull the plug now. Not when we're so close!
- You're always saying you can't stand androids! Fowler got on his nerves. Jesus, Hank, make up your mind! I thought you'd be happy about this!
- We're about to crack the case!.. Hank insisted, I know we can solve it!
Angie hadn't seen him so involved in a while. But for once a case was close to his heart, the FBI had ruined everything.
- For God's sake, Jeffrey, he continued, can't you back me up this one time?
- There's nothing I can do.
Fowler looked genuinely sorry but his hands were tied.
- You're back on homicide and the android returns to CyberLife.
Angie jumped, what were they going to do with Connor? She turned to him to see his reaction, but she couldn't read anything in his face, as if he was forcing himself to stay as still as possible, yet she had seen him more expressive before. Maybe that was his way of hiding his fear of being deactivated ... No, she couldn't rely on it too much, Connor was not deviant, he had proved it that very afternoon.
- I'm sorry Hank, but it's over, concluded the captain.
Lieutenant Anderson bowed his head then left the office, looking downcast. Angie hesitated to continue arguing their case but gave up and walked away too, followed by Connor. They approached Hank's desk, Connor sat on the edge and Angie leaned against the bulkhead behind the lieutenant.
