I hummed softly as I packed away for the day, just me in a empty classroom. The winter sun streamed through the clear glass of the windows, making patterns on the carpet. I was in my own little world, so much so that I didn't notice Dan running in and calling my name "Dan? Are you ok?" He ran up and grabbed my hand, pulling me away "I'll tell you on the way!" I knew it was important so I grabbed my bag and allowed him to lead the way. We ran out of the university and down the streets of London, all the way to the orphanage. Lola was outside with a bunch of children and noticed us running up pretty quickly "what's going on?" She walked up and shook her head, crossing her arms and looking at us "the orphanage is shutting down" my eyes widened and I stared at the place, looking at the building up and down "but what about the children?" I looked at Dan who bit his lip and his breathing became heavier, making me take his hand to calm him down "I'm taking some in but most will go to other orphanages" I noticed two girls in the corner of the orphanage, hugging each other. I let go of Dan's hand and walked over, crouching to their level "are you two ok?" One of the girls nodded, looking at me while embracing the other girl in her arms "what are your names?" She looked at the other girl and then back at me, her brown hair falling in her face "Jessica and this is Claire-"
"They're going to separate us!" I looked over my shoulder to Dan who was talking to Lola and I turned back, looking at them "I'll make sure you won't be separated" I get up and walk back to Lola and Dan, sighing heavily "where are those two going?" Dan looked over at the two girls, humming in confusion "New York and Claire is going to Scotland" I bit my lip anxiously, thinking. They are so young and remind me of Dan and I, they can't be separated "they can't be separated, Lola. Look at them, imagine what the result will be if you separate them" she exhaled sharply, looking as Claire ran up to us. I knelt down, looking at her "are we gonna be separated?" I looked up to Dan, who had the face of sadness for her and Jessica "I'm afraid so, Claire. But don't worry, you'll see each other again" Dan knelt down next to me, gesturing for Jessica to come over. She ran over, standing next to Claire "girls, we were orphans here too and separated and we've found each other. You two won't be separated forever" Jessica thanked us, nodding and took Claire's hand and ran off. My heart ached for the girls, and I prayed to every god that they and the other children will be safe

"This is unbelievable! Those children shouldn't have to go through this!" I hummed in agreement, not really paying attention to his rambling. I kept my eyes on my feet as we walked, my bag on my shoulder and my hands in my pocket "those girls are exactly like us, Dan. I'm worried for them" he looked at me, tilting his head slightly in confusion and asking me why I'm worried "you know how difficult it was for us when we were separated, I don't want that for them" he hummed, looking in my direction. He took my hand in a comforting way and smiled softly at me "I believe they will be ok, we were o-"
"But we weren't, we are now but the journey was so brutal! We both suffered and I don't want them to suffer the way we did" he wrapped his arm around my shoulders and pulled me in, hugging me one armed "I understand your worry but I believe in them, they'll find each other again just like we did" I smiled sweetly, ignoring the blush that was forming across the bridge of my nose and my cheeks. I felt safe in his arms, warm and like nothing could ever hurt me. But nothing can ever happen between us, we're just friends
