They've been talking about it for a while. They've been wanting to do this for a while. But neither had the time and they wanted the day to be special.

And today was finally, finally that day.

-

They spent their morning as they usually did whenever they had time off of work; spending most of the time in bed.

Doc squeezed Bdubs' waist as he buried his face in the crook of his neck. With a light laugh, Bdubs wrapped his legs around him and let one hand stroke his hair. He kissed his head, causing the hybrid to look up.

"I know what you're going to say, but I want ten more minutes at least." Bdubs slid his hand to his jaw and tilted his head up to softly kiss him.

"Alright, ten more minutes," he agreed. Doc kissed his neck before nuzzling against him again.

The freckled male had to admit; it was nice holding him like this. Normally they were in the opposite positions, but this was just as comforting for him.

Ironically, once ten minutes had past Doc was willing to get up, but Bdubs had gotten too comfortable and had to be dragged out of bed. "Don't you remember? We have big plans for today!" the hybrid laughed, ignoring his whines as he hauled him out of the room.

-

It was a beautiful summer afternoon with only a slight breeze as Doc and Bdubs walked down the street, hand in hand. The closer they got to their destination the more excited Bdubs felt, as he began to swing their hands between them.

"Do you have a particular style or color in mind?" he asked his boyfriend, eyes wandering between the buildings around him, as it had been a while since he visited this part of the city.

"To be honest, I was just thinking of stainless steel black," Doc admitted with a shrug.

Tilting his head, Bdubs thought for a moment. "Sounds perfect," he agreed with a hum. He briefly pressed his arm against Doc's before they took a left at the corner.

Once at the jeweler's, he held the door as they walked inside, greeted by the chill of an air-conditioned building. The place was practically empty and a woman behind one of the ring cases welcomed them in and over.

"What can I help you two with today?"

"We'd like to purchase a pair of promise rings," Doc explained.

"Wonderful! Looking for anything in particular?"

-

One purchase of two black rings (and a pride month discount) later, the two stepped out with new accessories on their hands. A warm grin formed on Bdubs' face as he watched Doc admire the black band on his finger.

Lacing their fingers together once more, he brought Doc's hand to his lips so he could kiss the new ring. The hybrid reciprocated, kissing the top of his head. "Y'know, we have a little time to kill before we need to catch the train, want to do something first?"

"How does ice cream sound?" he suggested.

"You've read my mind."

It didn't take them long to stumble upon an ice cream parlor. The shop was fairly crowded, which was to be expected for a warm June day. Not only did the place sell ice cream, but they had sorbet, frozen yogurt, and italian ice as well.

Bdubs went with coffee chocolate-chip ice cream on a waffle cone and Doc was going to get strawberry, but then he saw the raspberry sorbet and couldn't say no. Since there was nowhere to sit both inside and outside, they crossed the street to the park and found an empty bench under the shade of a tree to sit on.

"Good ice cream?" Doc asked.

"Yeah, it's- hey!" Bdubs laughed as he was cut off by the hybrid holding his wrist and leaning over to steal a bite. "I hate how you can just bite this stuff," he sighed, shaking his head.

To repay him, Doc held out a spoonful of his own dessert and Bdubs happily accepted. Sighing in content, the freckled brunette leaned against the taller's shoulder as he mindlessly licked his ice cream cone. "Hey, Doc?" The darker brunette hummed in acknowledgment. "Are you- is this fun? Are you having fun?"

"What? Of course I am, I'm with you after all. Why do you ask?"

He shrugged, catching a stray drip of ice cream trickling down the cone. "It's just- I dunno, I feel like my date ideas are kinda... boring. You always come up with the fun stuff."

Nudging Bdubs to make him sit up, Doc turned to face him and pressed his lips to his forehead. "Bee I don't know what's gotten into you, but your ideas aren't boring. If we're doing something together then I'm more than satisfied, okay?"

"Okay," he grinned, feeling better.

-

The main event of their date was something Doc had found. A drive-in movie theatre with a hill for people who wanted to sit on picnic blankets, which was what they were doing. The venue wasn't too crowded and the movie they were going to show was an iconic film from 1983 about teen gangs.

As they sat on the hill on a yellow gingham blanket, Doc laced their hands together to once again admire the rings on their fingers. He pulled Bdubs' hand to his lips where he placed a gentle kiss to his ring. Closing his eyes, he kept his hand pressed against his lips and just exhaled through his nose.

"You're really happy, aren't you?" Bdubs lightly laughed.

"Yeah," he murmured, eyes fluttering open. He kept their hands locked but dropped them to the blanket as he leaned over to share a kiss.

As the movie began, they snuggled up against one another, Doc moving his hand to wrap around his waist and hold him tight. Bdubs placed a hand on his thigh and gave a small squeeze as he leaned his head against him.

The more the movie played the more Doc realized he remembered. He had forgotten how much he liked the film and the book that came before it.

When one of the main characters dyed his hair blonde, he glanced down at Bdubs and jokingly asked; "Have you ever considered dying your hair blonde?"

He laughed and met his eyes. "Funny you should ask that," he kissed his jaw, "because you should see my college pictures."

"No, Bdubs you didn't!"

"Oh, I did. And I looked amazing."

Bdubs kissed one of the metal panels on his neck before turning back to the movie. Humming, the hybrid leaned the side of his face into his hair and idly rubbed his thumb on his side.

-

Bdubs raised an eyebrow, concerned as he heard sniffling. "You okay?" he whispered, eyes still on the final scene of the film.

"Dude the letter- this is so unfair," Doc muttered. "And- And before that- it was empty- he didn't-"

With a soft smile, Bdubs wrapped his arms tightly around him. "It's gonna be okay, you're okay," he assured him, punctuating with a kiss to his cheek.

As the credits began to roll, Doc dropped his head to his shoulder. "I didn't think I'd get this emotional," he laughed.

They both fell silent as Bdubs watched the other people slowly pack up and leave. He stalled before finally stroking his cheek, guiding his head up. "You wanna head home? I bet Tugger misses us."

Nodding, Doc pressed his lips to his forehead before standing up and pulling him to his feet as well. With clasped hands, they began the walk back to the train station.
