Doc is Still Scared of Thrill Rides

Why did I agree to this? Why am I here? Doc felt a rush of deja vu as he gripped the bar in front of him on the roller coaster. He and Bdubs were both very aware of his strong dislike for roller coasters and other such rides, yet they heard about a carnival and the idea of fried dough and bumper cars sounded like fun. The coaster car climbed higher and higher, his back pressed against the seat.

With gritted teeth, he cursed Bdubs and his bright smile. He had assured Doc he'd be fine with going alone, but he wasn't too fond of either of them being alone.

He was thrust back to the present when the ride lurched to a stop just before it reached the top of the curve. His eyes flickered over to his partner, who had the biggest smile on his face.

The sprinkle of reassurance he began to feel was swept away when the ride began to slowly slide backward.

Jumping, Doc quickly grabbed Bdubs' leg. In response, his boyfriend patted his hand, just in time for the roller coaster to jolt them forward, sending them flying over the curve and down. While Bdubs raised an arm and cheered, he squeezed his eyes shut and moved his hand to grip his wrist.

The cars were tilted to the side, causing them to slide; Bdubs pressing up against Doc. Then they were tilted the other way, but that time Bdubs quickly kissed his temple.

His stomach felt weird as they accelerated up a curve only to immediately drop. He realized he was gripping his boyfriend's wrist too tight and quickly let go. "Sorry," he breathed, returning to clenching the bar instead.

"Oh hey, there's the spot where they take a picture!" Bdubs pointed up, ignoring his apology as he shook Doc's arm.

Cracking a smile, he managed to relax a little as he leaned down to kiss his cheek, using the moment as an excuse to close his eyes again.

Doc's heart was still racing, his legs like jelly when they got off the ride. While he took a minute to recollect his thoughts and lean against the barricade for the ride, Bdubs ran off to grab the photo.

By the time he came back, the hybrid had taken enough deep breaths to calm himself down.

"Maybe you really should sit the next one out," Bdubs suggested, squeezing his hand as he kissed his cheek.

Swallowing hard, he shook his head. "N-no. What? No, we came here to have fun together," he assured him.

"Then let's do something you want to do! Forget the rides!"

He shook his head again. "We haven't been to a place like this since our first date. If you want to go on a scary ride I'm going with you," he insisted, only to immediately regret the words as they left his lips.

"Hey wait, can I see how the roller coaster picture came out?" Doc asked as Bdubs led him through the carnival.

He stopped walking in favor of staring up at the chair-swing ride. "I'll- I'll show you later. We gotta ride that!" Bdubs pointed at the ride as it started up, swinging the participants around in a big circle.

Thankfully, Doc seemed to temporarily forget about the picture as he squeezed Bdubs' hand. "Y'know, that doesn't look- terrible."

"And we can get fried dough afterward!" He had to hold back a laugh at how Doc's eyes lit up.

The picture was tucked carefully into his bag, along with other things. If he showed it then, the surprise would be ruined.

As they waited in line - the hybrid's bionic arm slung over his shoulder - Bdubs looked over at the different game stalls. He knew after the swing ride he didn't want to subject Doc to any more of them. Bumper cars were on their list, and the balloon dart game, but besides ending the night on the Ferris wheel like on their first date, he didn't know what else.
