For the Rest of Our Lives

Hand in hand, Bdubs and Doc walked together down the aisle. The guest list was on the smaller side, much to the delight of the hybrid. He had often wondered if there were more people Bdubs wanted to come see them, and even if he did, his soon-to-be husband never made such comments.

Now's not the time to worry about that. What's your speech, what did you want to say? Regrettably, Doc left an important piece of paper on the vanity in his dressing room. He had been practicing so diligently one would assume he wouldn't need to read off anything, but he was terrified of forgetting regardless.

The venue they had picked out was a gorgeous manor surrounded by a pinewood forest. Although as manors go the main building was on the smaller side, Doc wasn't about to complain. Thanks to the privilege of his and Bdubs' paychecks accompanied by smart management of their money, they could afford it in the first place.

Originally, the hybrid wanted the ceremony to happen indoors, but once Bdubs caught sight of the large garden outside lined with lovely little trees, there was no changing his mind.

It wasn't until that moment when they started that walk down the aisle that Doc finally realized it was the better option. For late November in their area, it was a warmer day but still accompanied by that crisp autumn breeze. Once they reached the end, the small bouquets of golden flowers they each had were passed off, freed hands clasped together.

Xisuma was the one to officiate their wedding. It was a surprise for Bdubs, who had no idea until the rehearsal dinner as up to that point Doc told him it was 'someone local he found'.

He began his speech about fate. How time can cause people to drift, but seems to find a way to ensure the right ones find each other again. "And it's thanks to that fate that a chance was taken. But the sole reason this bond has been able to last and remain strong can only be credited to the two here before us."

The hybrid had to swallow his laughter as he could see from behind Bdubs, Tugger was beginning to squirm in Zedaph's arms. He squeezed his hands, refocusing his gaze to meet his eyes. Eye contact may have not always been his forte, nor Bdubs', but there was something different about him and the same could possibly be said about him. Never did he feel forced to stare into his brown and green eyes. Like most things with his future husband, it was easy. It felt right.

I can do this without my notecard. Even if I don't remember it perfectly, that's not important.

As X continued, he rubbed his thumbs on his freckled skin. His anxiety was still brewing, but he refused to let it consume him. After all, it's supposed to be his day to be happy, calm, and in love.

When he was finally given the go-ahead, he pulled Bdubs a step closer and took a deep breath.

"When I first sat down to write out my vows, I was at a loss. I didn't know what to say, because how do I summarize all of my feelings for you in a small time frame? I asked you for help and you told me to just talk about what I like about you. But that wasn't right, because there's not much to say there." Bdubs and his friends laughed at his joke, which put him at ease. The words he had fretted over so much were spilling from him nearly effortlessly.

"Thanks." The other scoffed with a grin.

His smile grew to match. "Yet there's so much I love about you. I love whenever we're cooking something new and you start to argue with the recipe itself about how it doesn't know what it's talking about or it's 'spicing wrong'. I love when you got distracted talking to me and ended up burning the popcorn and scolded the microwave and the bag as if they were kids. I love how well you know the stars in the sky, I love how fast you can build new furniture. I love every little thing about you and I'll say it all the time and every day if I have to." Bdubs lightly laughed as he squeezed his hands. "You say I am, but I don't always feel like I'm the best at comforting you. However, I'll never stop trying. I will always give you my all. There are so many more things left to say, but that's what we have the rest of our lives for; so I can tell you every day why I love you."

-

Despite feeling so overwhelmingly happy, it panged Bdubs' heart that Doc still doubted himself. Before his turn, he took a small breath and his eyes fell on their hands. "I never told you this, but sometimes I wake up and find you having a nightmare. No matter how gently I try to wake you up you won't, and when it first happened I was scared because I didn't know how to help you. But then, I realized I could talk to you, and you'd respond in your sleep. So, I'd ask you what you'd want to eat the next day, or out of two shirts, which one I should wear. And then come morning, you'd be so surprised but happy to find I made the French Toast you dreamt about or wearing that blue shirt you were thinking of. It was - and will continue to be - my way of making you feel better."

Doc's smile grew. "I-I really had no idea," he breathed.

"Something else you might not be aware of is this certain face you make. You don't do it all the time, but every time you do it makes me feel like the only person in your world." When the hybrid looked confused, he eagerly elaborated. "Whether I'm confessing my love to you or doing something stupid like ranting about a movie I don't like, you'll give me this- smile, this ridiculously sweet, warm smile. It's as if you're realizing you love me every time. And y'know, I used to regret the years we missed, despite it being completely out of both of our control. I know you feel bad too, but I've decided to stop. So we didn't grow up together, that's not what matters. What matters is that we have the rest of our lives to spend together, to make new memories. When I thought your school friends were the lucky ones, I realized that I'm the lucky one who gets to be by your side every day."

Xisuma called Tugger forward to give them their rings, and Bdubs' smile grew as Zed brought him over. He giggled as he took the ring from the pouch on his collar, gently holding Doc's hand as he slid the wedding band on. Then it was the hybrid's turn to give him his ring.

Bdubs laced their fingers together, his excitement bubbling to the brim.

"And now, with the power invested in me by the state, I am honored and proud to announce you two husbands. You may kiss," X proudly declared.

He eagerly pulled Doc closer, mouthing a 'wait'. Pursing his lips, he twisted his husband so he could dip him and softly kiss him. Doc laughed, pressing chaste kisses to his lips.

Thanks to all the practice, their first dance went as perfectly as it could. Bdubs couldn't help but be reminded of their fight but was quick to feel better when his husband kissed him. Then kissed him again.

He leaned his head against his chest with half-lidded eyes as he felt the vibrations from Doc humming the song.

Even when the song finished, neither wanted to move. After all, they had cut the cake, and speeches were given, so they didn't need to. So when the next song began and more friends joined them on the dance floor, they stayed.

"We're married," Doc murmured.

He pressed his face into the crook of his neck. "My husband," he whispered in disbelief.

Doc lightly laughed. "Will we ever get used to that?"

Lifting his head, he flashed a warm smile. "I hope not, honestly." They kissed and their hands were squeezed.

"After this song, we should eat something," Doc suggested before twirling him.

He giggled. "Definitely. And look how much more confident you've gotten with your dancing!"

As he kissed his hand, his husband never looked away from his eyes. "Thanks to you." When he pulled him close yet again, his thumb rubbed along the small of his back. "Seriously, you're sure you're okay with us waiting until the spring for our honeymoon?" He double-checked.

"Yes Gorgeous. It's smart and I'm excited! Besides, we can focus our excitement on Christmas and New Year- I can't wait for all our first events as a married couple," he gushed. Doc nodded in agreement, and as the song faded, they shared one more kiss.

The day still had a long way to go before the sun disappeared, and the party certainly wasn't going to stop come nightfall. And Bdubs couldn't wait to enjoy every second of it.

But first, he wanted to eat.
