The jonin sat on the couch across from the couple, a small bag and photo in his hand. He placed them against his leg before resting his arms against the back of the couch.
"Thank you for stopping Tenzo, Kakashi." Both males looked at Akiko, both surprised and confused at her words. "I know that you didn't do it because you didn't want Kabuto hurt. I know you don't like him, but still. Thank you."
The man blinked, hesitating for a moment before speaking. "Don't thank me. I just have some questions for him."
The medic glanced at the older man. "So you save me from becoming a prisoner of war and expect me to just give you whatever intel you want?" He scoffed, rolling his eyes. "Fat chance. Besides, you already know I work for Lord Orochimaru. What else is there to know?"
"None of my questions have anything to do with him." Kakashi paused, crossing one leg over the other. "I did a background check on you, and found nothing exciting. You were adopted by a doctor here in the village, but after your betrayal, I figured that was just a façade. I did some research on any orphans from the last war that resembled you and found a boy with no name and no memory of who he was or where he was from."
Akiko noticed her boyfriend suddenly tense. She removed her hands and stood up. Kabuto moved to sit on the couch across from Kakashi. "So what if I am an orphan from the war? Aren't you?"
"This isn't about me. I'll let you walk away again when you answer my questions."
The medic let the offer run around in his head for a moment before scoffing again. "You mean once your satisfied?"
"Kabuto," he looked at Akiko for a moment before shifting his gaze to the silver-haired man. "Please." His eyes fell closed.
"Alright." He gave in, agreeing to the man's offer.
It surprised Kakashi with how the younger boy simply gave into her. He blinked, pushing the thought away for a moment. "You were adopted by a woman named Nonō Yakushi. I tired to find out where she lives, until I came across a report of her death. She was killed by a medical user who used a jutsu similar to one of yours."
"Any medical-nin knows how to use the chakra scalpel. You have no proof that I was the cause of her death." He felt anger well up in him, but he kept a indifferent mask on.
"So, you didn't kill the woman who gave you a new life?"
He suddenly became defensive. "Don't pretend like you don't have the blood of the people that you love on your hands, Friend-Killer." Kakashi became rigid at the title. "You have no idea what happened, Kakashi."
"You did kill her though?"
"Not on purpose. Did you mean to kill your friends?" The jonin's fists clenched, but he said nothing. "That's what I thought. Don't mention things that you don't understand."
"Fine." Kakashi handed the younger male the photo he held. A woman with long, blue hair and dark brown eyes smiled softly at the medic. "Does this woman look familiar to you?"
Kabuto looked at her, pain thumping on the right side of his head for a moment. "Nobody who works for Lord Orochimaru looks like you're girlfriend here."
"She's dead, and she's not my girlfriend. She was the mother of my younger brother."
"A brother, huh? That's the first time I've heard about that." Kabuto tried to give Kakashi his photo back.
"Keep it. I don't need it anymore." The two males dropped their aggression towards each other for a moment. The medic looked at the woman, a semblance of warmth filling him. He knew the woman from somewhere, but he didn't know where he would know her from. "Akiko."
The girl looked at Kakashi as he threw the small bag at her. She caught it without much effort. "What is this?"
"I went through Minato's house following his death to see if he had left anything for you or your brother. He had that, and a scarf."
"A scarf?"
"Yeah." The silver-haired man stood up and left the room, retrieving the scarf.
"Aki," She looked at Kabuto, sitting down beside him. "Why him?"
"What do you mean?" She looked at where the jonin had disappeared, understanding the question now. "Oh. Karma brought me here. I had no part in her decision."
"Out of everyone in this village, why Kakashi?"
"You don't like him." That much was obvious. At this point, she was just stating facts.
"What gave you that impression?" He paused thinking his words through carefully. "It's not that I don't like him. I respect his abilities as a shinobi, don't get me wrong. It's just that I'm scared that he'll take you away from me."
"Since when do you get scared?"
"This is serious, Akiko-"
"Oh, I'm well aware." She smiled for a moment before it dropped. She grabbed his free hand, her demeanor changing. "Kabuto, I know that you don't wanna be here. So I'm not going to poke and prod you for answers. You'll open up on your own time, when you want to."
He stared at her before shifting his eyes to the photo in his hand. "I've seen this woman somewhere."
Akiko tilted her head. "Where?"
"I'm not sure. My head hurts whenever I try to think about it."
"Why didn't you tell Kakashi?"
"I don't trust him."
The jonin hid himself behind a corner, watching their interaction. 'He doesn't exactly trust you either.' Kakashi glanced at the scarf in his hand before shaking his head. If Tsunade finds out, there will be consequences. He walked around the corner, called out to Akiko.
The young red-head turned at her name. Her eyes widened at the scarf in Kakashi's hand, recognizing it anywhere. "Here." He gave it to her.
"Thanks." She clutched the fabric close to her chest. The memory of her mother making it played in her mind, her face becoming devoid of any and every emotion.
None of them spoke. Kakashi stood with his hands in his pockets, his attention focused on the dark world outside. Kabuto's mind ran amuck as he stared at the picture of the woman. And Akiko felt every ounce of pain from the years without her parents collect in her heart all at once.
"The next time we meet, I won't turn a blind eye again. Get out of here, and don't come back to the village." Kakashi turned around, leaving the couple alone once more.
"Aki, let's go home." The girl looked up, nodding at her boyfriend. They stood up, becoming surrounded in a red chakra.
