Two years later
"Welcome to the bell, let me hear you yell,"
Brooke cringes at the Taco Bell employee as she stares at the menu in front of her.
"Hi, can I get just two five beefy-layer burrito with no sour cream please?"
The employee recites her order before asking her to pull forward. After getting her food Brooke began heading home her eyes watching the roads.
It had been two years since she had left California. She still talked to Lexus and Hunter they were the only ones she really got close with in the group but she did say hi whenever Lexus or Hunter were with someone and they were on the phone.
She hasn't heard anything from Xavier or Hank but she didn't expect to.
It still hurt Brooke that she didn't answer the door to Xavier when he knocked that night but she couldn't bring it upon herself to answer it when she knew she was leaving.
Saying goodbye would have been a lot more harder for her if she did. It would have broken her to see him.
Plus she felt like she was better off without him in her life.
When she got home, her mother was sitting at the table with her reading glasses perched on the top of her head pushing her hair back in the process.
Brooke's mom had been cancer free for almost a year now and she looked just as beautiful.
It had been hard the first couple of months for Brooke as she got used to knowing about her moms cancer sometimes she felt like she was hovering but she couldn't help but worry.
She felt horrible that she didn't notice it until after her mom told her. She was angry at herself. She was happy that her mom was cancer free but that didn't stop the guilt from consuming her.
"Hey honey, how was school?" Her mom asks once she sits at the dinner table, a smile appearing on her face.
Brooke shrugs her shoulders handing her mom one of the burritos. "It was fine, I got an A on my test."
Her mom smiles proudly as she puts hot sauce on her food. "That's great! How's the boyfriend?"
Brooke smiles at the mention of Hunter.
They had been dating for a total of six months and she couldn't be anymore happier.
After their little date on her last day in California, Hunter would talk to her every night and he even came and visited her for a couple of weeks once or twice a year.
Hunter filled a hole that Brooke didn't know that needed to be healed and she was happy that it was him who healed it.
Hunter made her happy and even though she didn't know if she was in love with him or not she did know she had strong feelings for him and when he had asked her to finally be his girlfriend after nearly two years of talking, she was thrilled and couldn't drop the smile off her face for weeks!
Hunter was a great boyfriend and she was so glad that he had asked her. Sure long distance was hard and she did miss him but he came out and visited and he understood why she didn't want to go back and visit California— even though he only thought it was because of her dad— so when she could get the time off work and school they would make plans to meet half way so it wasn't always just him traveling.
"He's good, he got a puppy over the weekend and named him Coco Puffs,"
Brooke's mom laughs at the name choice of Hunters dog shaking her head. "That boy is strange, what kind of dog?"
"A brown miniature poodle,"
Brooke's mom nods her head putting her book down on the table. "Any pictures?"
Brooke smiles grabbing her phone from her back pocket opening Snapchat and showing Hunters story.
Brooke's mom smiles and coo's at the puppy, laughing when she watches the video where Hunter falls face first in Coco Puff's poop.
"He's adorable," Her mom says handing her daughter her phone back.
Brooke blushes setting her phone down on the table. She was glad that her mom liked Hunter she would never date anybody that her mom didn't approve of—not like she had anything to worry about in the first place, Hunter was a great guy and was hard not to like.
The sound of Brooke's phone going off breaks her out of thought.
She looked down at her phone a smile appearing on her face as she notices the name popping up.
"Speak of the devil and he shall appear," her mother joked.
Brooke rolled her eyes answering the FaceTime call her smile growing as she sees his face.
"Hey babe, you look gorgeous as always," he greets like he has been since the day they've started talking, a blush appearing her face.
"Thank you, you look good too. What's up?"
Hunter gets in his jeep shaking the rain from his hair as he turns his car on. "Nothing much just got done at the gym. I have something to tell you."
"Ooh, what is it?" Brooke asked squirming in her seat getting excited.
Hunter smiles looking at the phone before turning his attention back to the road as he backs out doing that one hand thing that Brooke found hot that guys did.
"Well I was thinking about coming to visit you a-"
"Oh my gosh! When?"
Hunter laughs shaking his head. "Let me finish, I was thinking about coming to visit you for a month and I was thinking maybe next month?"
Brooke squeals nodding her head making her mom look at her in shock while Hunter just laughs.
"Oh my god, you're coming here to New York?"
Hunter nods his head with a grin. "Yep, and I'm bringing someone too."
Brooke smiles, she finally gets to meet CoCo Puffs! "Oh my gosh, I can't wait! When will you be here?"
"My flight is next week and I'll be there the whole month."
"Great! I can't wait to meet the puppy,"
Hunter laughs. "Well I'm bringing him too but I meant an actual human being,"
A look of confusion crosses Brooke's face as she stares at her boyfriend in confusion. "Who?"
Hunter grins pulling into his drive turning his car off and taking his seatbelt off. He grabs his phone and gets out of his Jeep before answering.
"Xavier,"
