“You opened up your heart bare,
And mine started to race.
I looked for some love there,
Or just even a slight trace.
I found a treasure,
Where others just saw empty space.”

The ride to college felt like a headache wrapped in chaos—thanks to Emma Carson.

She wouldn’t stop ranting, “Why is your family so damn partial? You and your sister are both biological daughters, and still, they treat you like you’re invisible! Why can’t they just treat you equally?”

The funniest—or should I say craziest—part was when she suggested I get kidnapped to blackmail my dad for money, just so we could study together.

She’d been talking nonstop for the past half an hour. I honestly don’t know how her mouth doesn’t cramp.

Finally, I snapped. “Em, for God’s sake, stop your nonsense! I don’t want to die young in an accident because you distracted the driver!”

She ignored my yelling but continued her blabbering. I swear, she really knows how to push my buttons.

“Just shut your damn mouth, Em! You’re acting like I’m moving to another continent. It’s just college—we’ll still see each other after classes!” I yelled in frustration.

“Mad! Idiot!” she shot back, “It’s not about just studying together! You’re throwing away your dreams like they’re nothing. When will you start standing up for yourself, Hannah?”

That startled me into silence. She always wants the best for me—wants to see me happy and successful.

Still, I couldn’t help but pity her future husband. With the volume she operates at, poor guy’s gonna go deaf.

After that, the rest of the ride was quiet. Em was clearly upset. But oh… she had no idea what was coming. Her reaction would be priceless.

Once we parked, we got out of the car. She still ignored me.

“Em… don’t I at least deserve a ‘good luck’?” I asked, a little guilty.

She turned to me, sarcasm dripping from her voice. “All the best, Miss Hannah Walker. Go find a job like your dad wanted. That’s clearly more important to you than your best friend.”

Ouch.

“I’m sorry, okay? I didn’t mean to yell earlier. And as an apology…” I leaned closer and whispered, “What if I told you… we’re going to the same college? Because I’m not giving up on my studies.”

I backed away just in time to see her face—confusion, shock, and joy all mixed into one priceless expression.

“What! Really?”

I nodded, and the next second, I was pulled into a bone-crushing hug.

“Em—I can’t breathe!” I groaned dramatically, but she didn’t let go.

She was emotional, and I didn’t want her crying on her first day of college.

“Em… Em… I… c-can’t… breathe…” I fake gasped.

She finally let go. “Drama queen,” she muttered, rolling her eyes.

“Don’t tell me… you lied all this time?” she asked.

“Stupid! It was to surprise you. And don’t even try to act like you’re not surprised—your face says it all. Ugh! I should’ve recorded it!” I laughed.

She glared at me. I glared back.

And then suddenly, she attacked me with tickles.

“Em, stop! No, Em! I don’t want to get scolded on the first day!” I laughed uncontrollably, my stomach aching from it.

Finally, she stopped, and we headed to our classes.

Thankfully, we were both in the same department, so most of our classes were together.

After a few boring lectures, we met Ryan and Tyler during lunch. They were also from our department. We chatted for a bit, exchanged numbers, and decided to meet at the cafeteria later.

That evening, I told Em everything—how I convinced Dad, the part-time job plan, all of it. She was mad at first for keeping it from her, but eventually, she understood.

We even spent two hours job hunting, though we didn’t find anything suitable yet.

By the time I dropped her home, we were exhausted—but happy.

First day of college: chaotic, exhausting… and totally worth it.

When I got home, I noticed a few unfamiliar cars parked outside.

Are we expecting guests? Mom or Dad didn’t say anything.

If there was something important, they’d have at least called, right?

Probably just Dad’s friends, I thought. Anyway, it’s freezing—I need to get inside.

And… of course. I lost my damn keys again. That’s my fifth set this month.

I rang the bell. And rang. And rang.

No one opened the door.

After almost eight minutes of freezing and ringing, panic started bubbling up. I began banging the door hard.

Suddenly, the door flung open—and someone pulled me inside.

I was about to scream, but a hand slammed over my mouth, cutting off the sound.

Wait—what the hell?! What’s happening?!

Oh my God.

Am I being… kidnapped?!

OMG… WHO WAS THAT?!
Is she really being kidnapped?!
Or… is this something else entirely?

Any guesses, readers?
