Hannah’s P.O.V

After lunch, we began our trek into the forest. The path was beautiful—wild, green, and full of life—but my thoughts were elsewhere.

I wanted to win, at least until I spoke with Hazel.

Back when we were having lunch, she leaned over and whispered that Zander had promised to propose to her if they won today. Her eyes sparkled with excitement as she spoke, and even though I don’t particularly like Hazel, I couldn’t help but feel happy for Zander. He deserves all the love in the world.

I told Aaron about it, expecting him to feel the same.

But instead, his expression darkened, and I could feel the anger radiating off of him.

Why was he upset? I couldn’t understand. Zander is his best friend—shouldn’t he be the first one supporting him?

We began walking deeper into the forest. As we entered, the distant sounds of wild animals echoed through the trees. I instinctively grabbed Aaron’s hand tightly.

He chuckled and teased, “A little child scared of animal roars?”

Embarrassed and a bit irritated, I shot back, “Who’s scared? When I can handle a monster like you, lions and tigers are just... a piece of cake.”

He smirked, “Then lead the way, Miss Bravest.”

I glared at him and walked ahead with fake confidence, pretending to be fearless. Truth is, I was terrified. If a cat had walked by, I probably would’ve fainted from fear. The bushes around us hissed and rustled, feeding my paranoia.

“What if that’s a snake? What if one suddenly jumps out? Oh God, please save me. I’m still young and have so much to achieve,” I mumbled nervously, tiptoeing forward like each step might be my last.

And then—thump!—something fell on me.

“Ahhhh! Sn-sn...snake! Mom, help! A snake fell on me!” I screamed.

Aaron ran towards me, frantically checking me over... only to burst into laughter.

“It’s just a branch, you drama queen,” he said between fits of laughter, holding his stomach.

At first, I was furious, but his laugh was so infectious and weird, I couldn’t help but laugh along.

“Come here,” he said softly.

I stepped toward him, and he gently pulled me closer, wrapping an arm around me.

“Nothing’s going to happen to us. I’ll protect you at all costs. So don’t worry, baby doll. Just stay by my side,” he whispered.

“Emma! Slow down! I don’t wanna die today!” I shouted, gasping for air as she sped up the cycle.
