It had been a week since the incident, and something still felt off between Liam and Emma.
I asked Emma about it, and all she said was, “I don’t want his help. I’d rather marry Lucas Black.”
Unbelievable. This girl seriously tests my patience sometimes.
But first, I needed to know what really happened between them. So I texted both of them and booked a table at a nearby café.
After my shower, I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror. The bandage on my hand was still there.
I remembered how furious Dad had been. He yelled at both me and Aaron for being so careless.
It was still hard to believe Hazel was behind everything. I had been so happy for Zander when she said he would propose to her. But then it all turned into a disaster.
If she wanted those rings, she could’ve just asked—we would’ve given them to her.
Now, we were all seated at the café. But no one was speaking. The silence hung heavy in the air.
“So, what’s going on between you two?” I finally asked, breaking the ice.
They exchanged glances, then quickly turned away from each other.
“You wanna talk, or should I just stop talking to both of you?” I added sharply.
“He blamed me for what happened during the trek,” Emma said flatly.
I looked straight at Liam, waiting for his explanation.
“If she hadn’t freaked out over that damn monkey, I could’ve helped you sooner,” he said.
That made me angry.
“You both helped me! And for your information, Emma was attacked by a monkey when she was five. She’s been terrified of them ever since.”
I turned to both of them. “Now, compromise. And Liam—I need to talk to you about something important.”
“I don’t need his help,” Emma snapped. “I’ll handle everything on my own.”
“So what’s your brilliant plan? Get engaged to that mannerless jerk?” I shot back.
She paused for a few seconds. “If it helps my family, then yes. I will.”
I grabbed her hand. “Don’t forget, we’re family too. You’re not just my cousin—you’re my best friend. I’m not letting you face this alone. We’ll save uncle’s company together.”
Liam leaned in, confused. “Can someone please explain what’s going on?”
“Do you know Jones Black from Black Corporation?” I asked.
He nodded.
“Then you should know that he wants his one and only spoiled brat of a son to marry Emma. The engagement is already set for next month. If she says no, he’ll cancel the project deal—which means uncle goes bankrupt and possibly ends up in jail.”
“What?!” Liam looked stunned. “Do you even know what kind of guy Lucas Black is? He’s the worst bacteria to ever exist! The stuff he does is illegal—he’s dangerous. Emma, how could you even think of marrying him? Are you insane?!”
“At least he won’t blame me for things I didn’t do,” she shouted back. “And maybe he’s better than you!”
With that, she stormed out.
I turned to Liam. “She’s just angry. Don’t take it to heart. But we really need your help.”
He was still fuming, but I pressed on.
“I know Black Corporation’s biggest enemy is Queens Corporation. I want your dad to invest in uncle’s project. I also know that if you don’t settle by 25, you’ll lose your shot at becoming CEO—and your cousin will take over.”
I hesitated for a moment.
“So... I want you to pretend to be dating Emma. Please, Liam. Don’t say no. You’re the only hope we have.”
Liam took a breath and nodded slowly. “Look, I can promise the investment. But I won’t pretend to date Emma unless she agrees. Don’t worry—I’ll talk to Dad as soon as I get home.”
Just then, I got a text from Emma:
“I’m meeting Lucas at the Plaza at 5 PM. If something goes wrong, call the cops.”
I looked at the time—4:30 PM.
Her phone was off. I couldn’t reach her. It would take at least an hour to get there.
“What’s wrong?” Liam asked, noticing the panic on my face.
“I’ll explain on the way—just drive to The Plaza. Now. Emma’s in danger.”
Without a word, he grabbed the keys. He drove like a madman, jumping signals and speeding through traffic. We made it there just in time—5 PM sharp.
After some quick inquiries, a staff member guided us to the presidential suite. At first, we weren’t allowed in, but Liam talked to the receptionist—tears in his eyes, saying something I couldn’t hear from where I was. Whatever he said worked. The receptionist handed him a keycard and called someone to escort us.
Liam entered the passcode and opened the suite.
It looked empty at first. We were about to turn back when we heard a sound—muffled voices coming from one of the rooms.
We crept toward it quietly and pushed the door open.
As soon as we heard Emma’s voice—we rushed in, the door slamming open with a loud thud…
And what we saw left us completely shocked.
