Zander’s P.O.V

“Boom!!”
I heard a loud sound echo through the forest. I immediately turned to Hazel. “Did you hear that?”

She froze for a second, clearly shaken. Then, forcing a calm tone, she replied, “You’re just hallucinating. I didn’t hear any—”

“Boom!”

Before she could finish, the second shot pierced the air.

“See? I’m not imagining things. Someone’s in danger.” I grabbed her hand and started walking toward the sound.

But she stopped abruptly, tugging my hand back. “Zander, you’re overthinking. Why would anyone be in danger? Maybe it’s just hunters in the forest.”

Something about her tone didn’t sit right with me.

“Hunting is illegal here. We need to report this to the police.” I pulled out my phone to call.

Suddenly, she snatched it from my hand and shoved it into her bag. “Why call the police? Why get involved in other people’s business? I’m tired. Let’s just finish the trek.”

Her words didn’t add up. “What if our friends are in trouble?” I argued.

“I said no!” she snapped. Then added, more calmly, “Maybe Aaron fired his gun. You know how he carries it around—maybe he shot it in celebration after winning the game.”

It sounded logical… but something still felt wrong. The gunshots had come from deep inside the forest—not near the finish point. My gut screamed that something was off.

“Come on! We’ll miss the proposal!” Hazel said cheerfully, dragging me back toward the trail.

“Hey!!! We won!” she squealed when we reached the end. “We’re the best couple!” She danced with excitement, her face lit up with joy. Her energy made me smile, even if unease still lingered. She handed me the ring and said, “Put it on my finger!”

I hesitated. “I do want to put a ring on your finger, Hazel… just not like this.”

She looked nervous. I stepped closer and asked, “Baby… what’s going on? You’re sweating, your smile’s forced. You’re not yourself today. Is something wrong?”

She laughed nervously. “We just walked a lot, and it’s hot. That’s all.”

I opened her bag to retrieve my phone—only to find it switched off. I remembered clearly: I’d fully charged it this morning. Why was it off?

I turned it on. Dozens of missed calls from Liam and Emma.

And one voicemail.

I played it.

Liam’s voice, frantic.
“Zander—Hannah’s been shot. She’s in the hospital. It’s bad.”

My heart dropped. My hands trembled. “No… no, no, no…”

Hazel’s expression changed. “What happened?” she asked.

“Hannah’s been shot,” I said, already rushing toward the car. I made sure Hazel was inside before I started driving like hell.

Everything suddenly made sense—the gunshots, Hazel’s strange behavior, her trying to stop me from checking. I pulled the car over and looked at her.

“If I find out who did this to Hannah… I’ll make them suffer. I’ll kill them with my own hands. They better pray she survives, because not even God will be able to save them from me.”

Without waiting for her response, I hit the accelerator again.

We reached the hospital. My heart thudded in fear as I searched for Liam.

“She’s stable,” he said, “but still unconscious. The bullet’s out. She lost a lot of blood.”

I swallowed. “What about Aaron?”

Liam exhaled sharply. “He’s completely lost it. He’s pulled a gun on almost every hospital staff member. The police caught the shooters and are bringing them here as per Aaron’s orders. Worst part… he told his men to open the dungeon.”

I froze. “The dungeon…?”

Liam nodded, eyes grim. “Yeah. The one he swore never to open again. Not after what happened last time—with his dad’s kidnappers. They were tortured for six months until they died. He promised he’d never go back to that dark place.”

“But now…” he continued, “he’s doing it for her.”

The monster inside Aaron—the one even he was afraid of—was being awakened again. And this time, there would be no mercy.
