READERS POV

1943

I looked down at the date on my arm sighing. June 5th, 2018. How the hell was that supposed to be my date? I would be lucky if I lived to thirty. Let alone one hundred.

Glancing up, I turned my gaze over to where my best friend Bucky and twin brother Steve were sitting. I let out a quiet sigh. Why couldn't I be like them? They were soulmates and as much as I loved the two of them, it really sucked being the third wheel. Especially knowing that I was probably never going to meet mine.

Steve and Bucky had been laughing at something one of them said and I could see Steve beginning to wheeze. Bucky started rubbing his back gently trying to calm him down, and I turned my gaze away again, staring at the floor.

Steve and I shared all the same health problems, but that never stopped us. Bucky was being drafted into the war, shipping out in a week, and Steve and I were trying to find a way to join against Bucky's protests.

Luck was on Bucky's side however because at the moment, no matter how many times we lied on our enlistment forms or went to different recruitment centers they always denied us. Steve because of his health problems, and me because of my health problems and the fact that I was a woman.

"You okay Y/N/N?" Steve asked. Steve had always been able to read me like a book, but at this moment in time I didn't want him worrying about me. Not when he should be spending every last second with Bucky before he leaves.

"Yeah. I'm good," I said shooting him fake a smile and hoping he believed it. "Just a little tired. I think I'm gonna go lay down for a bit."

Steve nodded his head slowly, giving me a look that said he knew I was lying, but turned back to Bucky anyway. Thankful that he didn't say anything, I made my way to my room.

--------time skip, Stark Expo--------

"Wow," Bucky said, his tone full of awe as the three of us entered the expo. Then, grabbing both of our hands, he dragged us up to the front of the stage. Bucky had been excited for this all week, hoping to make the most of this night, as it would be his last night with us before he shipped out.

After Howard Stark's flying car demonstration, Steve and I snuck away from Bucky who was too engrossed in talking to his friend to even notice. Figuring it might be easier to enlist at a convention, we made our way over to where the recruitment was taking place.

When we were denied again, the two of us left the room only to be met with an extremely angry Bucky waiting for us. "Seriously? Again? Where are you from this time, Queens? You guys are going to get caught and arrested. Or worse, actually get recruited and die."

"We're not sorry that we want to fight Buck." I said. "People are dying over there, and we want to help!"

"You can help from here, where you won't be killed in two seconds! I can't-." He couldn't even finish his sentence because he was too pissed off. He stormed away, leaving us behind. Steve and I just looked ashamedly at each other, before a man came over asking us to follow him. We looked at him with question in our eyes but followed him anyway.
