READERS POV

My eyes slowly fluttered open, and as they adjusted to the light, I glanced over at my alarm clock on my side table. The bright red letter read eight twelve AM, and I rubbed my sleepy eyes with my hand. I knew I was up early, but I hadn't really been able to sleep last night in the first place, filled with too much giddiness for the day ahead.

Today is my birthday, and I was ecstatic because this would be the first one that I was celebrating with the team after only being recruited nine months ago. Growing up in foster care and then being taken by HYRDA hadn't exactly led to a happy childhood, so this would also be the first birthday ever that I would be celebrating with a family. A real family. My family.

A huge grin expanded over my face, and I threw my sheets off myself, quickly scrambling out of bed to get ready for the day. I picked a cute outfit, before going into my bathroom to fix my hair and add a bit of mascara. The final step was to brush my teeth and once I was done, I skipped happily out of my bedroom.

On my way to the kitchen, I ran into Nat.

"Hey Nat," I said cheerily. "Did you want-."

"Not today Y/N. I've got work to do." She spoke bluntly, before walking away and leaving me in the hallway staring after her.

"Okay." I muttered out sadly to myself. Then, trying not to let it get to me, I continued on my way to the kitchen where I found Steve, Bucky, and Sam.

"Hey guys." I said smiling at them, hoping that this interaction would go better than the one I had with Nat.

Their various responses came, as I sat down in front of them.

"What are your guys plans for the day?" I questioned.

"We're going to the Yankee's game this afternoon." Steve spoke, happiness in his tone as Bucky and Sam hummed in agreement from either side of him.

"Oh." I said quietly, my voice losing a bit of its pep.

"Why Y/N/N, what's up?" Bucky asked.

"Nothing." I said, the frown evident on my face as I slid out of my chair before turning and leaving the kitchen.

I ignored their calls that I hadn't even eaten anything as I headed towards the lab where Tony and Bruce were, only to leave defeated after they told me they weren't leaving anytime soon. After that I decided not to bother with the rest of the team as surely, they probably all had plans too. I was doing my best not to cry as I made my way back to my bedroom when Clint walked past me.

"Happy birthday Y/N/N." He spoke, but I just ignored him, continuing on my way.

I thankfully made it back to my bedroom without any more interactions, changing into something comfier before leaving the tower and making my way to my favourite bench in Central Park. As soon as I sat down, the flood gates opened, and I couldn't seem to stop the steady stream of tears that rolled down my cheeks. I probably looked like a lunatic, crying on a park bench in the middle of Central Park on a bright sunny day, but I couldn't bring myself to care. What a way to spend my birthday.

CLINT'S POV

I stared at longingly after Y/N as she walked away from me after ignoring my happy birthday. She's never acted like this. Ever since she joined the team, got her freedom back, she's been full of happiness and joy, always bringing a light to everyone's days. So, to see her so down, especially when she was so excited to spend the day with all of us was troubling. It was her first birthday with a family. I didn't know what was wrong at first, but it immediately became apparent the more that I walked around the tower. It appeared that everyone was getting ready to do their own things. Everyone had blown her off.
